FocusSmudge
Hi guys, Seeing as though there is no history of the cambelt being changed, thought I'd call around for some quotes. A local cambelt specialist has quote £90+VAT for labour if I supplied the parts. I'm looking at one of two kits on eBay. Can these be trusted? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TIMING-BELT-KIT-WATER-PUMP-FORD-FOCUS-MK2-1-8-TDCI-05-/300945368717?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Car+Make%3AFord%7CModel%3AFocus%7CPlat_Gen%3AMK+II%7CCars+Type%3A1.8+TDCi&hash=item4611bde68d http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-FOCUS-MK2-1-8-TDCi-05-09-DIESEL-TIMING-CAM-BELT-KIT-TENSIONER-WATER-PUMP-/390493555945?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Car+Make%3AFord%7CModel%3AFocus%7CPlat_Gen%3AMK+II%7CCars+Type%3A1.8+TDCi&hash=item5aeb3acce9 Cheers :)
IINexusII
your links havent copied properly, its broken id only get the genine ford cambelt, which i believe is made by Gates. you wouldnt want to get something off eBay for such a vital component http://www.fordpartsuk.com/shop/ford_focus_mk2__18_diesel_timing_belt_kit_f_1201255_c_589.htm

Can get Ford Genuine for roughly £120. These kits were £50 each which is probably a bit too cheap! Just waiting for a quote back for parts + labor. iantt
Use ford parts, but I can do one in 30 mins so labour shouldnt be much from and independant

I Will be doing my belt on my 2009 1.6 zetec focus next year and will be getting a genuine ford kit. I'll only have the Haynes manual as a guide but I have done some on the old escorts belts so I'm hoping it should be too bad to do.
FocusSmudge
Thanks folks. Garage just rang back. For genuine Ford parts plus labor, £185 + VAT which didn't seem bad so will go with that. Not got the technical knowhow to do this myself. That was £90 labor which I think may be 3hrs?
IINexusII
is that with the water pump?
FocusSmudge
is that with the water pump? That's belt, tensioner and water pump yes. Or the alternative is I try it myself. Kit on Ford Parts UK is roughly £60.

Kit on Ford Parts UK is roughly £60. its £60 without the water pump, and you will need the correct locking kit tools to lock the timings while u replace the belt
FocusSmudge
Ah ok, I'll get that booked in then. Thanks again for clarifying.
artscot79
Defo genuine parts had to do a mates water pump twice after he bought a cheap one it lasted 5 weeks the genuine one is far better quality
south_bound
How do you find out who is a real cambelt specialist, as opposed to someone who just tells you they are? I got quotes of £430 to £470 +VAT from Ford dealerships so really need to find a good independent to do this. I would have a go myself but that would mean all day under the car and I don't have that kind of spare time. The Ford garages said it would take them 3 hours to do the work, so after taking off the cost of the parts that comes in over £100ph! south_bound
BTW, those prices were without the water pump
artscot79
Down here it cost someone i know for timing belt kit water pump aux belt and coolant £317 inc vat .ide go with someone recommended in youre area as there has been posts on here where independants have mucked up the timing.reviews and word of mouth are best im sure theres someone on here near you who can recommend a garage
FocusSmudge
They claim through their website they're the 'regions cam belt specialist' and have 13 5* reviews on a local site with only one negative that relates to a 'work experience student', apparently. My quote was for a timing belt, tensioner and water pump + labor for £185 + VAT (Labor was about £90 I think) which didn't seem too bad. I've had a few bad experiences with some local garages and with not many left (lol) thought it would be worth giving this one a go. Would love to do this myself as I've never trusted garages with any of the vehicles I've sent in, but unfortunately I have no paperwork to suggest it's ever been done and I neither have the time, expertise or tools to undertake it myself :(
theredfox
had timing belt/pump /aux belt done at local ford dealer fitted was €450 not saying indi garage cant do it cheaper
TomsFocus
Bit late to this one, but you don't NEED to use genuine parts. As long as they're a good brand, they'll be fine. A Gates belt on eBay will be much cheaper than the one in the Ford box. I made the mistake of buying a cambelt kit from a Peugeot dealer for my last car. It was a Conti belt, SKF idler and Dayco tensioner. Cost me £100 with a bit of discount as I was in there so often lol, but could've bought those individually cheaper.
FocusSmudge
Thanks fella, I spoke to the garage this morning regarding parts. They'll be using a Gates kit (sure I read somewhere Ford use these?) It's going in early tomorrow morning so should be done by lunchtime. Was originally going to supply the parts myself to keep down the cost, but transpires it was cheaper for them to supply and fit!
FocusSmudge
Just picked the car up. Had a Cambelt Kit and the Water Pump. The later was apparently leaking and a good suggestion to replace. I did see the unit and it would appear the mechanic was correct. All in in, £185 inc VAT, didn't seem too bad. FocusSmudge
Very pleased with the service received, not tried them before but would most certainly recommend/return to if needed. They didn't think the cambelt had every been replacing going by the state of the old one.
