HOW TO Retrofit genuine parking sensors to MK3+MK3.5 Focus

Featured Replies

Also when you do find the loom the 2/3 black & mustard brown plugs may not be immediately apparent as mine were wrapped in a sheath of grey foam so it looks like part of the loom ! ,you need to carefully peel away the foam to expose the plugs , please see image of my ones once I had removed the foam.

Thanks to @Bannko 's guide and help from @Phil21185 and @Tommo17 I now have automated parking. I actually got it working a couple of weeks ago, but wanted to test it fully.  I used @Phil21185 gui

@Phil21185 how easy was it to swap the abs sensors ? I’m finally going to get round to reactivating my park assist  and my initial testing seemed to work. But when I got the fault. I never bothered fixing it till now 😝 so when I can test again if it’s not how it should be I’ll swap the sensors.

It's like key hole surgery if you haven't got a ramp. I had mine up on a jack with the wheel off, and basically you have to do it by feel. Be a good idea to have a small mirror and a torch (I took pictures with my phone). Its a Torx bolt, but I dropped it and it took ages to get the thing back out of the suspension arm. About 10mins for the drivers side and 20mins and lots of swearing for passenger side.

Thanks pal. I have no idea where that is as I’m sure I looked when I first came to do the retro fit. But that doesn’t look like what I could see haha.

It's on the back of the rear hub, but it's impossible to see it and undo it at the same time so you end up doing it blind. Just go easy when you undo it if it's really stiff as I think I read somewhere that they can shear off, and let's face it, that would spoil your day.

At the moment I'm getting the malfunction warning when I start the car, but just haven't had the time to look at it. Do you know if it will show where the fault is in forscan, say one of the sensors? Or does it just give a fault for the whole system? @Tommo17

Mine listed fault on every sensor including rear. I’ve checked the wiring and it was ok so switched to rear module and changed to rear sensors only and works fine. So ordered new module and hope that solves it.

Not sure what your second picture is there. Is that under the rear?

So I've got your circumstances correct:

Pre-facelift focus

3 plugs in the boot

4 Rear sensors already

Front fog lights?

The answers to all your questions are actually in the comments you've read, but it is a lot of info!

If you already have 4 working sensors at the rear, you do not need to add the other two. The general consensus is that the pre-facelift parking module will not recognise the 6 sensors, and if you installed the facelift module, it wouldn't be recognised by the prefacelift BCM.

Parallel parking will work on the pfl With just 4 rear sensors in any case.

Without the front sensors, if you install the adaptive parking assist module, you will get an error and the parking system will not work. The fault will have to be cleared using Forscan after the front sensors have been added.

Before going too much further, take the front bumper off and check how many wires are in the connector plug. Front fogs only will just have 4. Parking sensors and front fogs will have 12. This is the side of the connector attached to the car were talking about here.

It sounds very much like you're in the same position I was. I had all the wiring in the car up to the passenger footwell (rhd) but had to add wiring between there and the bumper. If your bumper plug has only 4 wires, you will have to do the same. Wasn't too hard to do. You will likely have the wiring to the buttons and that will be plug and play.

The easiest way of checking this is to remove the passenger knee panel and see if you have wires going to the large plug there, as described a few posts above.

I never got round to a full guide for this (filling in what little was missing from Bannkos excellent guide) but if it would be helpful then I will.

Thanks for this, thinking about doing it but not sure I have the patience to wire it all in. So want to check whether I have the right wiring first.

So I need to check under my boot lining for the wires for the parking module, doesn't matter if I have the wrong module, as long as I have the extra plugs?

And I need to check how many wires are in the plug in the front? Is this the plug that connects into the back of the fog lights? Or is it the source of that cable (if you know what I mean)? Any way to check this without taking the whole bumper off?

Cheers,

Andy

Its a big connector under the nearside headlight, which does also contain the fog light wires. To check if the wiring is there at the front end, without taking the bumper off, see Phil's post and 'Phil's build Thread. You can check a connector behind the glove box.

With my Mk3 I had the 3 connectors in the boot. No wires to the front bumper and no wires to the switch.

Mine was also showing a fault on every sensor. I cleared the codes and put the ignition off and on a few times. The rear left inner sensor fault came up, so I swapped it out and that seems to have sorted it.......for now.

Didn't solve It replacing a module. So must be a fault somewhere. Sure i seen a power or ground fault will show the fault im getting. When the weather is better ill take the bumper off.

Only thing i can think off was one of the park assist sensors was slightly broke from focus city wouldnt lock in but seemed like it wouldn't come out. Easy fix if so.

Have you swapped out the rear Abs sensors for the right ones @Tommo17?

I think I remember Phil saying he got the malfunction warning until he swapped his.

No mate worked fine for about 2 week. Then had the fault. Ill get round to sorting eventually 🤪 or ill start from scratch and run the wires again and add the ones for blis why im at it.

i am thinking it maybe the switch though as when i press the front sensor button that flashes then goes off. When i push park assist that flashes and stop start button lights up for a few minutes and i then get the warning about a malfunction with park assist.

Yeah that doesn't make sense. I guess it's possible that the led indicator and switch wires are around the wrong way.

Ive got the sony usa facia to go on soon as it stops ***** down 🙄 ill go and check again mate when ive got the facia off. Dont understand how it worked fine for a few weeks then have this issue.

I have a Focus Facelift, and no connectors or sensors fitted. I contacted Ford hoping to have them fitted for the rear. They informed me that the sensors would not show a graphic on my Sync 2, all it would do is beep. Can anyone confirm if this is correct, as the picture in the first post looks like Sync 2 with a graphic. Thanks.

@suavegarve Ford garages are not fitting the factory sensors. They are fitting just the aftermarket sensors that are available on the official ford accessories website and they will only beep and do not cooparate with the car's display. If you would like to have the factory solution you will have to do it unfortunately yourself.

Thanks @Bannko I assumed buying from Ford meant I was getting the factory sensors.

That is what most ppl think, but unfortunately not.

Checked out fine all to the switch mate. Bumper off job. My plug for the front sensors. Is belling out between all points. Not sure how thats happening as 6 of them are not linked. That being the sensor  wire yet vbat and ground dont bell out so no short with them.

It’s true what Bannko’s saying , the original owner of my focus had the xvision reversing sensors fitted by the dealership before it was even  registered! ,they are definitely aftermarket, work ok but independently of the cars system ( no graphics) and the colour coded paint kept flaking off revealing the original black plastic colour underneath, all looked a bit tacky, why would you do this go to all the trouble and expense of buying a new car and then picking it up from the dealership with aftermarket parts fitted ( not mountune), surely he could of only saved himself a couple of hundred quid?

hello guys i have the ford focus mk3.5 2015 and i want to retrofit the autoparking. My car come with 4 rear sensors, active city stop, auto start/stop and hill start assist so with the knowledge that i have got from that topic is to install 2 rear sensors,6 front sensors, interior switch,front/rear looms for 6 sensor each side, the abs sensor is not needed in my case because i have active city stop (correct me if i am saying it wrong) and the car have the correct ABS sensor and the last one is Active park assist module.
I am confuced what instalation i have to do for the 4  side sensors, because the diagram shows two options. The first option is to install the sensor with a bracket and the second one is to put an silicone O-ring between the sensor and a bracket. Which instalation is the correct ?

I already have the park assist on my car but its not currently working the fault message come on every time I start the car. A mate connected the car to a fault reader and it said the rear right inner and front right outer were not working so we have replaced both sensors. Still no joy so we checked the wiring at the front. The ground wire looked rather black and in poor condition. We have re connected the wire from harness to the bumper harness but fault message still showing. Is there anything else we can do? Next step is to take the front bumper off is this easy to do?. It stared working interment before it stopped working altogether which is why we thought it may be the ground wire. Could it be the module which has failed? I am not bothered about the park assist I would just like to have the parking sensors working again.

@Col66 did you get sorted. I’ve finally managed to fix my fault.

did you replace with ford sensors or aftermarket ones ?

I bought a non genuine for the rear an genuine for the front as it was a painted one. This weekend we finally sorted my park assist. It turned out it was a wire broke at the back in the sensor look and a the loom plug at the front so although the fault reader pointed to the sensors it was in fact a broken circuit to the front outer and rear inner. So I have 2 spare sensory if anyone wants them.

Hi,

intrigued by this now I have time on my hands...

Found this in the boot, so guess that means I have the loom in place for rear sensors. Any ideas what the black connector is for?

thanks in advance
