Further to my post of 9th November, my 2019 C Max 1.0L turbo went into the dealer and they updated the powertrain control module. So far, so good but time will tell. Mirroring some other posts, I do try to fill with Shell 99ulg as it does seem to give about 10% better fuel economy.

Car went in today for a static regen and the PCM was software updated.  Hopefully that will be the end of it but will let you know how I get on.

well how did the software update go 4 you

So far so good allenj but maybe its not been cold/long enough yet.

I bought a 1.0 eco bust last December (18) and almost instantly started getting the exhaust message and no matter how I tried driving it kept coming back. It only stopped coming back when the outside air temp rose (around March) and only came back when the outside temp dropped again (Nov 19).

Occasionally I also get a message saying that ESC service required but once the ignition is switched it goes way 🤔

I hoped winter of 2018 when the warning of filter at max drive now to clean came on repeatedly was a conditioning issue, the dealerships had no answer and were waiting for info from Fords, needless to say I have received no further updates from them.

The warning stopped when the ambient temperature started to rise, would you believe it as soon as the ambient temp went below 5C this winter the warning started appearing again and is now as frequent as winter of 2018, but still no updates or answers from Ford could it be they don't care about their customers.

no its because they haven't had a reply from Peugeot who make the engines...

the actual reason is that the filter is not getting hot enough probably from the need to keep it cool when its doing its burn cycle, the square factor of maths measn it needs a lot more heating per 5 degrees of temp loss, the map in the ecu is for a warn climate, the update is the cold region update that is installed naturally in countries like argentina, brazil and sweden

Peugeot don’t make the engines. Ford make their own ecoboosts.

The 1.0 and 1.5 are completely their own designs.

it was a joke mate sorry if it did not translate well as we all know most ford diesels are pug motors
For corrections sake the ecoboost was actually designed by FPV engineering in Australia working with Mazda and only transferred back to the EU in 2014 when FPV closed and John Wheeler took over the performance engine lead.

Ford has taken over their Diesel engines too now. The 1.5 isn’t Peugeot only the 2.0 is. Although tbf they had put a lot of money in to develop the engine series, despite Peugeot being the builder of them. You see a lot of the related parts with all three of the Peugeot Citroen and Ford logos on.

The 1.0 eco boost was designed in the UK by Ford at their Dunton centre.

The 1.6 eco boost is like fords old 1.6 tivct with a turbo strapped to it and few more tweaks and the first 1.5 eco boost is just a short stroke of this with integrated water cooled inter cooler.

The new 1.5 is based on more of an expansion of the 1.0 design and was first out as a NA engine for the Indian market as I believe their engineering team worked towards it.

The 2.0 and 2.3 eco boosts are based on Mazda blocks from when Ford owned Mazda, which are the only ones the fpv and Australia part relates to and they aren’t the ones experiencing the gpf warning

Hi all,

No issues since the update but we haven't really seen those super low temps since I had the update, so who knows.  As a side also note not had any issues with the Emergency Call System which was also updated at the same time.

GoDiagnostics...that's interesting... so there isn't anything mechanically at fault that they have had to work around via software, they have just corrected the map?

I too have been having issues with my Focus petrol engine car.    The GPF warning message is becoming a daily occurrence.   I’ve followed instructions in the user manual but even after a long motorway drive the message returns on next journey. My last 3 cars have been a Focus but after this I doubt I will get another.   I am taking my car to the Ford garage for a diagnostic next week so hopefully this will reveal the cause.  Will repost the result

Fwiw, your last 3 cars probably didn't have a GPF.

It won't matter what petrol you pick now it's likely to have a GPF, from any manufacturer.

Ford certainly have had software issues initially with the GPF on the 1.0/1.5 Focus, which I believe they were supposed to have now addressed, but like with Diesel DPFs, certain use cases for the car, it's going to be inevitable to have filter blockages.

I dont think we've seen any reports of Gpf problems with the 1.5, certainly the software update is only applicable to the 1.0. It has the gpf located in a slightly different position, where it probably reaches temperature more easily. Also the 1.5 has a combination of port & direct injection rather than the totally direct injection of the 1.0, and so produces less particulates

That has been my experience with my 1.5 too.

I have been doing some monitoring with FORScan and after a few days of only short journeys the Implied Soot Load  for both Open and Closed Loop can go into the teens, but after an out of town run they both go back to zero.

There is a PID for GPF Pressure but it is in Volts. Mine usually stays below 0.5V and assuming that the range is 0.45 to 4.5 that would be good, but if anyone has the conversion figures from Volts to actual Pressure and the recommended limit value I would be very grateful if they would share it.

It would be interesting to see some corresponding figures for a 1.0 if anyone has Forscan ...

That's an interesting point. Don't think I've seen any mention of it happening with the 1.5. The original belt cam 1.0 still used in the Fiesta has had gpf fitted since around mid-2018 and I don't think I've seen mention of gpf problems on that, either.

It only seems to be the revised chain cam 1.0 used in the Focus that seems to have had problems.  I think that's the version used in the mHEV Puma, so it will be interesting to see what happens with that.

I'm fairly sure I heard somewhere, that the gpf is positioned closer to the manifold on the Fiesta and so probably heats up quicker, thus allowing any soot build up to clear under normal passive regeneration.

I have had my new Focus for about 15 months. This warning starts around the end of November both years. I see it most days sometimes several times a day. I just cancel it now and take no notice. On one occasion it came on, I cancelled it, drove over 100 miles at 60/70, stopped for coffee, drove on after half an hour and there was the warning again. Just won't by another Focus next time.

One year and 5000 miles of incident free driving, on February 5, message reappeared!  I thought the 100 mile round trip on motorway and A roads on that day and the following 2 journeys of over 30 miles had cleared this pesky issue. But no today at the usual 2.2 miles into my journey the message came on again. It did disappear after 1 mile of driving. If it continues then will repeat my previous tack of writing to Andy Barratt MD of Ford UK. At least one of his assistants did reply.

Did you have the recall with pcm update?

No recall.  A year ago  when the problem started, took car into my dealership who told me they ran a diagnostic test which showed the filter was clean. After that had no issues. Am intending to go to my dealership on Wednesday and speak to them again.

get them to do a pcm update. that should fix your issue.

Picked up car from dealer. Exhaust filter was at 147%. A static regen done and a pcm update. They hope that this should now fix the issue. So do I!!
