Heater Matrix C Max

I have developed the dreaded leaking heater matrix on my 2011 C max and just had a couple of questions:-

1) Doe the full dashboard really have to come out or can you fix it by just removing the central pannel.

2) At what point did Ford start putting the new matrix into it's new C Max's, basically if I was to get another C Max what years do I need to avoid so I don't get the same problem , is everything from say 2015 ok?
