2001 gear shift/ gearbox problem

Gear box seems to be stuck in 3rd and can only physically change from the neutral and 4th position but 3rd remains engaged. Clutch works fine and linkages in the gear stick boot are all in tact.

any one have any ideas on what this could be?

    you need to have a look at the other end of the cables on the gearbox. On my 2007 fiesta they were under a black plastic cover which could be unclipped to open on front of the gearbox. it was quite easy to get to up under front bumper with car jacked up a bit (jacked and supported in safe mannner). Not sure if yours is in same place.
