Auto hold problems

No. Not confused at all. 

I prefer to rest my foot on the break pedal if I have too rather than rely on an electronic function that may or may not work 100% of the times.

In my line of work we don't take chances and if I put my foot on the brake pedal then I know 100% that I'm not going anywhere rather than having to keep looking at either the icon on the dash or that the button in the center console is lit.

    I read the whole of this thread getting worried that the handbrake would not come on or that the car would roll off down a hill never to be seen again...but I have never read such a long thread about

  • Just don't release your foot from from brake pedal until you see the green A in the dash? I haven't had any issues it turning off, but I still wouldn't release my foot unless I've seen the acknow

Definitely not intrusive. Pressing light on the brake is a very good feature. Auto hold not disengaging quick enough..I don’t feel that. There’s no resistance.

You learn to trust the auto hold . I was the same re foot on the brake to begin with.it can turn itself off (not often in my case) but that’s from starting engine , I can see the green auto hold light hasn’t come on at first junction, flick the switch , good to go.

And what about those behind you at night? I use auto hold all the time and it's always worked. 

I still don't get your comment about auto hold because of hill assist though. 

I don't use auto hold as if in a stuck queue I'd rather stick it in P than have it sat in D pushing against the brake.

It's their responsibility to cover their eyes, it's bad enough we have to wear masks in shops to protect other people, now we can't blind them with brake lights either?  :pissed:

If those behind me can't keep a safe distance away then that's there problem.

But for what its worth I rarely go out at night or when its dark.

I could take out the bulbs or paint over the lenses if that's better.

I don't understand why you don't understand either 😄

I am quite light sensitive and find today's intense led brake lights hard work, to the point where I will stop my car a good few metres back to lessen the glare.  In a queue I would rather just stick it in P or handbrake on than sit pressing the brake.

I had laser treatment at 40 for short sightedness.  Worked an absolute treat, better than 20/20, my distance vision is superb.  Gave me better night vision but also increased light sensitivity.

My sister had her eyes done at 40. 
 

50 now.....blind as a bat

Don't think the context came across in text, I wasn't being serious, pre-empted Wino's reply, which was exactly as expected lol. 

I'm also very light sensitive, I wear dark glasses everywhere outside my flat during daylight, I'm well aware of how annoying the majority of automatics are in queues. :sad:  As far as I know, that's still the way people are taught to drive auto's though, foot on the brake unless it's going to be a lengthy wait like a level crossing or something.

Using P or handbrake would be better for the brakes than auto hold after a spirited drive also...holding pressure on hot brake discs is likely to warp them or burn contaminants onto them.  Rears shouldn't be hot enough to cause the same issues...  Though I must admit, I'd probably just let the auto-hold do it!

Completely off-topic but my 80 year old Nan had cataracts done recently...she now has better than 20/20 vision and no longer requires glasses for anything!  I was amazed tbh... :biggrin:

Safe distance? Whats that all about?

What I don't understand is everything you've explained about the situation. It's like you didn't know what it meant, have just realised and then went along with you already knew. Like I said, the original comment about auto hold and hill assist seemed strange. And then that you might use it if auto handbrake works but only when nearly home. 

Oh well, auto hold works extremely well for me. If you don’t want to use a feature, that’s obviously up to you.

The auto hold and hill start kinda merge into one. I don’t know what it’s like in the manual. But in the auto it sticks to the steepest of hills, no danger of rolling back, no resistance when pulling away either. Is that the hill start ? Which the owners manual says it doesn’t tell you when it’s working and you can’t turn it off. It works flawlessly. 
 

*yes auto hold can turn itself off (not often) but easy to spot.

You yourself mentioned about the concerns of other road users behind if I chose to sit with my foot on the brake pedal therefore creating a "Glare" to the driver behind.

If the glare from a brake light is too much for someone to take in then perhaps they should be taking thier own precautions and wearing  😎just in case somebody decides to press a brake pedal.

For what its worth do you know if the brake lights actually illuminate when you use the auto hold function ? 

If so how do you stop your lights from glaring into the driver behind you ? 

Brake lights do come on, basically the auto hold just saves you from keeping your foot on the brake pedal in start/stop traffic.

It's not glare but the courtesy I'm talking about. I wouldn't sit on the brakes at night. Which moves me onto the next point of you are right that the brake lights do come on, so I'll stop using auto hold during night hours. 

Managed to get my auto handbrake apply twice in a row tonight it’s the first time I’ve had it work.

I stopped the car with just the brake and switched the ignition off so it went to park automatically, the handbrake then applied automatically when I opened the drivers door.

I’d say that’s a safety feature rather than a use every time you park feature.

Applies on open of door or when seatbelt is took off. 

If your parked on a hill, the car could roll? Before u get the door open? 

There’s a bunch of owners complaining about it being a safety issue. Sounds like it’s not a problem for you?
