@Eng_Ahmad1986 we are waiting for your news! It is unacceptable situation for this engine with 8 years in production, having problems like this! Broken piston! Does you friend car or yours has the system with cylinder disactivate and gpf filter?

But they have made over 5 million Ecoboosts - they will have a few failures.

Are you speaking from experience there?😀

  • Just had 2nd service 18 plate 125 - no problems. From Carbuyer: Are there any known EcoBoost problems? The EcoBoost tech has now been fitted to millions of engines, and is really pretty

  • Yes the exterior lights come on and the door mirror puddle lights come on also. You seem a bit obsessed with lights, you sure you'd not be better off buying a Christmas tree 🤣

For me the car is still under inspection, will get a reply by next Tuesday, will keep you updated.

Update : I was at the dealer today, they told me that after disassembling the engine, they found that the piston rings of cylinder no.1 has failed due to a manufacturing defect , they told me also that they sent to ford asking for approval to replace the short block, and possibly the cylinder head and/or the turbocharger, approval will be within a week, I’ll keep you updated.
Frustrating to see a failed engine after only one year and 15k miles of use 😢😢

car is 2019 mk8 fiesta ecoboost 100ps automatic

Thanks for the update. Do you know if your car has Cylinder Deactivation?. It would be interesting if it does because It is Cylinder 1 that is deactivated on the 1.5, so presumably it will be the same on the 1.0.

From what I have read the Valves are kept closed during deactivation to keep the temperature in that cylinder up, although it will not be as hot as the other two. If it does have Deactivation then I wonder if that is what caused the Piston Rings to fail.

I can assure you that my engine doesn’t have cylinder deactivation, and I do have a great concern if this piston ring issue is a common fault or its just a bad luck, I happen to know couple of friends who have the same fiesta as mine with the same engine, also almost one year of ownership from new, both of them have the same white smoke issue, though they didn’t check with the dealer yet, probably they have the same cause as mine !!

All the modern petrol ecoboosts have cylinder deactivation.

It's a cool technology and not new, Merc, Lexus etc. were doing it in their v8s way back in the day.

The article actually mentions 2018:

"The 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine featuring cylinder deactivation technology will from early 2018 deliver reduced running costs for customers by automatically stopping one of the engine’s cylinders when full capacity is not needed, such as when coasting or cruising with light demand on the engine."

So I wonder from what point in that year it was actually introduced to production? Is there any way of identifying if your engine has it?

From what I've read the 1.0 as fitted to Focus Mk4 and Fiesta MK8 from 2018 is really completely different from the 1.0 before this.  Maybe the really early 2017 Mk8 Fiestas had the old one?

The 1.5 dragon 3 cyl is of course completely new from 2017.

Afaik the Mk 4 Focus got the revised (chain cam) 1.0 from the off. The Mk 8 Fiesta had the belt drive version even after gpf's started to be fitted. Mine is certainly the old version and other members have posted pics of 2019 cars that are still that type.

What's in the one you bought recently, Guy - any chance of a shot of the engine? Here's mine for reference.

Ecoboost that is equipped with cylinder deactivation can easily be distinguished by the actuating valve on top of the valve cover, mine hasn't got this valve, mine also has the timing belt in oil, I'm sure mine hasn't got that technology, mine is 2019 mk8 fiesta but it was built actually on October 2018 according to Ford etis.

This is ours, but although the car is registered as a 20 plate it was built 2019, it is the 100Ps version, not the later 95PS.  Engine sticker says 28 Oct 2019.

I do not think that the piston failure is common. I've been lurking in 3 Ford related forums for a few years and am also member in some Facebook groups. Heard about few cases of piston failure, but it's definitely not very common.

Other reasons for engine damage are more common, like engine overheating.

aye.  We have had 2 1.0 ecoboosts now, and my 1.5.  None of which have smoked or needed oil topping up.

The 1.0 in our Fiesta is also the old style without cylinder deactivation I think, car is on a 69 plate.

So looking like cylinder deactivation on the 1.0 is only on the revised chain cam version, then?

I think so also 🙂

Anyone got a pic of this valve?

Is this the valve? November 2019 built engine.

Edit, I was referring to the silver object right side on a slant, but I think that's just the high pressure fuel injector yes?

I wonder if the valve is hidden under what looks like a plastic engine cover? That's definitely the revised engine though.

Ah yeah could well be. I'll have a better look around when it's drier. I registered with ETIS and with my VIN, there is a section in the mechanical guide that states timing chain, so as above I presume if it has a timing chain, it will have cylinder deactivation yes?

Well, I think we've managed to establish so far that the pre-chain engines don't have it. Don't suppose anything in your literature mentions it?

Trouble with these things is they operate so fast (about 20 times faster than a blink of an eye I believe) you wouldn't notice it in driving. I've driven a few VW group cars with their equivalent ACT system and didn't have a clue when/if it had deactivated cylinders.

I had another dig in Etis and, yes seems like it is confirmed to have cylinder deactivation, assuming ETIS has the correct information for my VIN 🙂

Do you need a login to ETIS to see that?

Sounds right. Be interested to see what's under that cover if you get the chance to have a look! Just curious - I've not had a look at the revised version and don't feel it would be right asking a dealer if I can poke around under a bonnet in the present situation!😷
