Energy chat, the future of car propulsion

Featured Replies

None of the ones I drove were a dual fuel configuration. The engine controls are very different between the two types. LP is much less BTU per unit than Petrol. I’ve also driven a CNG powered Honda Civic. They weren’t available to the general public. But, American Honda provided a few of them to the University of Michigan for study and evaluation. The Ann Arbor area has both high and low pressure CNG at certain fuel stations. The CNG Civic had better cold weather drivability than the LP until the temperature dropped well below freezing. Then the acceleration became very labored. I could probably live with a high pressure CNG car for general use.

Weren't Tesla meant to be making a truck?

It's just arrived, but you have to build it yourself.

Sure ‘old chap’. On a more serious note, I like Tesla’s, but this truck is just one ugly mother. EV’s at present I don’t think are the answer, would love to see Hydrogen as an alternative fuel, but there are a lot of issues getting it mainstream. Tesla’s for our market come out of China & are in the top three sales in the country.Go figure, all the ‘greenies’ want them.

I have a theory that the shape of the Cybertruck is intentionally polarizing. It’s a convenient way to eliminate direct comparison and it probably will repell most of the conformist types.

In America, Range, payload capacity and towing capability are the most scrutinized specifications for light trucks.
People who have horses or quads and dirt bikes or race cars have towing requirements that approach commercial weights. When I was involved in club road racing a Ford ZX2 Escort, the combined weight of our car, 28 foot long enclosed trailer and all the tools and equipment for three days of play tipped the scales at 10,300 pounds. I don’t think the cyber truck is going to be on many peoples buy list. But, I’m sure it will have it’s fan base.

At least you can get a matching dog to put in the back of the truck 🤣

... or is this just (political) smoke and mirrors?

I'll be watching "Electric Cars: what they mean for you" on BBC 2 tonight.

Unlike yesterdays "British Miracle Meat" on Channel 4 that I mentioned elsewhere, I don't think this is a "mockumentary".......😀

I recommended that show on another thread, it's a repeat but well worth a watch. The whole series is highly recommended... (definitely not a mockumentary LOL)

My apologies! There is indeed coincidentally a show on BBC1 tonight (2 x parter) as you stated. The series I mentioned is on BBC2 at 7pm, with episode 3 tonight (!) also being on electric cars!

Just watched the BBC1 show, 'Electric Cars, What they really mean for you...'. Absolutely more convinced than ever that the current generation of EVs is a folly. Synthetic fuel was demonstrated in a 1960s E Type, Yes, synthetic fuel is expensive to produce now, but development should see that fall. Then my favourite, 'hydrogen' a standard 4 minute full up, good to go for 380 miles, exhaust emission free.

Money isn't an issue, government trashed £37 Billion on a useless track & trace system, even Blair managed to scrap £14 Billion on an NHS IT system that was so bad, it wasn't even commissioned. Government has a talent for squandering eye watering amounts of our money, just look at HS2, budgeted at around £60 Billion, now actual spend is in excess of £100 Billion with completion years away.

The point being that there are alternatives to EVs, and the government has been so badly advised to pick out one single technology. Let the market decide what customers want, government should keep their nose out becasue lets face it, they have demonstrated time after time after time, they couldn't run a bath efficiently!

We need a mix of technology, unfortunately we are all being forced  & dare I say ‘conned’ into EV’s. We should not be relying on one form of propulsion, quite ridiculous really.People fail to realise that to manufacture EV’s it is actually a very dirty process.Hardly ‘green’ are they? But, don’t tell the ‘greenies’ that.

Yes, that one I have definitely seen before.

Funny you should bring that up, Ford(Australia) actually brought out the first dedicated LPG car in Australia in 2000.They produced the Falcon with an option of a dedicated gas model as an option, very popular with taxi fleets as it was @ the time a very cheap fuel.2011 they brought out a new & very much improved system called the ‘Ecolpi’ gas system, very, very good system.I purchased a brand new ‘XR6’ Ford Falcon Ute with this system, 210kw & 410Nm. Pretty quick things. As soon as you unlocked the car with your remote, the gas system automatically started priming.World class system at the time.LPG is no longer that popular anymore, prices have risen quite a bit, which actually is crazy, as gas is a natural resource & plentiful. They seem to export vast quantities of the stuff & obviously money is to be made from it.Taxi industry is now all Toyota Hybrids exclusively. CNG is used in a few bus fleets in Australia, notably Canberra’s Scania buses.(Quite old now though). They are slowly going over to electric ones.

We've probably been over the same ground many times, but I don't think EVs are necessarily a problem in themselves, it's how you get the "E" to the "V" that's the issue.

Whatever, I feel we've reached the point of no return at least in respect of non-hybrid ICE in the UK/EU.. Even if the government were to postpone the 2030 date, most manufacturers have already taken irreversible steps to phase out their pure ICE production by, or before, that date, investing billions to do so.

Some clarity is now desperately needed to establish what definition of hybrid will be considered acceptable up to 2035, otherwise the likes of Toyota will be shutting up shop here too. You wouldn't think it would be so hard to come up with the answer, but then, leading politicians struggle to define a woman.........

Synthetic fuel won't get much cheaper.  It's just too inefficient to produce.  I can only see that being used to keep classic cars on the road in future.

What I did find interesting in that program was the removeable roadside charging posts.  Hadn't seen those before.  That certainly makes EV ownership possible in city centre terraces for example.  Exactly the kind of place where tail pipe emissions need to be reduced for direct human health.

Toyota stand alone in the only major car manufacturer with a more progressive stance in the approach to EVs, questioning the blind government position that EVs are the saviour of the planet. It's a shame that other brands have been so blinkered...

Yes, I can see a whole tertiary industry popping up selling replacements, as they are stolen & vandalised. Still, every cloud eh? LOL
