Focus Mk4 Engine cover...missing? (photos)

Hi Tom, thanks for the heads up on that. Going to be doing some work on mine today so will check. Did you know that if for any reason you are unable to open the passenger door say parked inside your garage at home with a flat battery (not that would ever happen),  then you have to break the bonnet release handle off and use a screwdriver to operate the bonnet release !!!!!!    It's in the handbook

Ah really?  I was reaching over from the drivers side to do it...maybe that was the issue if it's not meant to open like that.  :ermm:

  • You're being silly now. Of course not, but the 2023 model only comes with the two front seats as standard 🤣

  • Covers are indeed available. eBay would be a good bet, although you can get them new from Ford - £53 new, £25 eBay. Any cars from Sept 2020 build onward don't now come with engine covers which is

  • I see Nissan sorted the fuel filler problem on the Leaf and put it in the centre but I can't seem to find out what side they've put the exhaust on 🤣

@unofix I've just checked the manual...what a ridiculous design!!

Will accept that was my fault then!  But also that the bonnet release DOES still work with the door closed (eventually), despite their over-complicated procedure!

On a serious note, as this is sort of a Mk4 bonnet thread, I had a hell of a job opening the bonnet to have a look yesterday.  It just wouldn't release from the interior lever.  Was fine a month ago on the day I got the car.    Probably worth anyone else with a newish Mk4 trying the bonnet release asap, and possibly even periodically, in case it won't open when you really need it to.  I know it takes 2 pulls but I must have needed about 6 before it released the first click!

Mine was very stiff too, so I adjusted the rubber bump stops and it is fine now, and better aligned. It was the same with the Hatch door, it needed slammed to close before I adjusted it.

@unofixI don't think you need to break it, there is a small plastic pin that you lever out. Someone on this Forum had to do it and did post instructions but I think it was part of a bigger post so may be difficult to find.

The tailgate won't close properly on mine either, assumed it was just the rubber seal needed to bed in.

You're right about the release lever, looks like a plastic tab on the handbook.  But the need for a socket to open it is ridiculous, most of us will have one, but 'normal', non-car people probably won't...

Read this with interest. Some may know my Mk2 bonnet lock failed last year (you need to rotate the front grill Ford badge to expose keyhole, then insert the car key, rotate left to de-catch, then rotate right to open). A ridiculously over complicated design which I am genuinely surprised that they still have an issue on opening a bonnet on newer cars!

It does 'look' easy, but I can just tell that there'll be many threads in the future of Mk4 bonnet open failures 😞

I had to remove my bonnet release lever, when the telematics module flattened the battery.

Not Fun!

Trying to lie across the front seats, head in the passenger footwell and pull it apart by phone LED light, then using some pliers to turn the mechanism.

I think the car was engineered to be LHD first, so that lever would be on the driver's side. They didn't move for the lever for RHD, just made you try and take the thing apart instead.

That would make sense.  Thinking about it, I'm surprised there's no legal requirement for it be on the drivers side...  If you or emergency services need to open the bonnet quickly in an emergency, that would be far more efficient.

They also moved the filler flap to the NS, and exhaust to the OS...I'm sure it was the other way round on both the Mk2 & 3.  Maybe just trying to confuse any previous Mk3 owners!

The exhaust tips are quite aesthetically pleasing parked next to my Golf with twin tips on the other side!

The fuel filler on my Mk2 is on the OS (driver) side lol

I think that if you single lock your car you can open the passenger door but if you double lock your car and the battery goes flat then you can't, so you have to use the emergency opening procedure.

Luckily car theft is not a big problem where I live so I rarely double lock it.

My one worked perfectly after the adjustment.

Has anyone bought a focus st line/x since November this year? I've only just gotten round to popping the hood, and I was surprised to see that there was no cover on top of the engine, is this unusual?

Many thanks,

Phil.

Are you meaning a cover for just the engine itself or the whole engine bay ?

Well getting back to the inner wing plastic trim, I took mine apart today and .... I don't have any plastic bags !

My 2019 MK4 just has a thick load of felt stuffed down inside the wings together with a lot of mud.

I took some pictures of the "Sounder ???" if thats what it is.

Looks like it's okay for me to not get this plastic trim considering how much dirt it just collects back there.. i still wonder what's the parts number for it though just in case

I haven't found anything about whether the plastic nor the sounder thing on the internet yet.

I've also watched some videos just to see some more engine bays of MK4's and there was a red one with the plastic on one side and missing on the other! Maybe they did this because of missing parts so they didn't have to delay thousands of cars because of a little plastic trim?

I'm not impressed with this cost cutting, it just makes it look like a half finished product and obviously the reduction in cost isn't passed onto the customer 😕

Just seen the post above (posted just before I posted mine) it's like someone has fly tipped a bin bag in the inner wing. What is Ford thinking, perhaps to save money, remove the plastic based engine cover but stuff the wings full of plastic insulation instead, I think they've lost the plot....

Ford have done this with every model as long as I can remember unfortunately. The car gets released and reviewed then the bean counters get let loose on it.

Things like boot lights disappearing (mk3 launched with 2 later only had 1), etc.

My 2019 STLX has the rubbery engine cover.

Petrol or Diesel ?

Mine has no engine cover (Diesel) IIRC.

My LHD Mk 4 has the bonnet release lever on the drivers side, which makes sense that it was originally designed that way and not changed for RHD models.  I assume (fingers crossed) that the drivers door can always be opened even with a flat battery by using the key insert...otherwise that would be a really useless design.

My fuel cap is on the drivers side and exhaust is on the passenger's side on the LHD Mk 4.  My old RHD Mk 2 is the same, but obviously physically the opposite due to the steering wheel being on the other side if that makes sense.  I always thought the exhaust would be on the drivers side to avoid gassing pedestrians but maybe I made that up myself and no one really cares about pedestrians health?

My 2019 2 ltr diesel has a kind of partial rubbery cover (and had no problem opening the bonnet to check just now) but something was making a continuous whining noise the whole time I was out there

How did you find the swap to LHD after so long sitting on the wrong side over there?  Presumably makes junctions and overtakes easier?

Exhausts and fuel fillers don't tend to be swapped for the opposite markets, though I'm not sure what actually decides which way they go in the first place.  I have seen tests done on exhaust fumes during the school run...basically there wasn't a discernible difference between left or right tail pipes as the air gap between them is so small.

I note you also have a dribbly washer...that must be another Mk4 issue!

Not sure I'd actually a 2.0 EcoBlue before.  What's that square metal thing out of interest?  Looks like possibly the most un-aerodynamic inlet manifold ever?

I'll have a look and take a photo later today after I've finished at work IF I remember 🙄

Funny how you get used to things.  For a long time I was driving my UK car with the steering wheel on the "wrong side" and taking frequent work trips back to the UK and picking up a hire car there for a few days.  Had to think about what side to drive on the first few times but then often would only think about it half way home from the airport.

The main advantages for having the correct side steering wheel are overtaking and paying motorway tolls when you have no one in the passenger seat.

Dribbly washer doesn't surprise me on a Ford but at least they are placed under the bonnet and so don't leave marks on the paintwork - maybe they have learned their lesson from Mk2?

I noticed the big silver box as well - will have to see what it says in the handbook
