Sync3 Map download problems.

I have a Fiesta Titanium 2017 plate and needed to update the Sync3 software and Maps.

I downloaded and installed the Sync3 software (now shows v 3 see below) with no problem and sent the log file to Ford via my Ford account. It now tells me my Sync3 is up to date but I need to download the map updates (the in-car info tells me I have V6.1).

I clicked the Maps "Prepare Download" button and began, after about 2 hour I got a message "Something went wrong. Error Try again later". I have been trying to do this about a dozen times over the last 3 days on different computers on both Google and MS Edge with the same result (I have Windows 10 computers with plenty of disc space and ultra fast fibre broadband.

If anyone can offer any help ! would be most grateful.

Have to admit I’ve never personally had an issue with the Ford Sync3 site and downloading files. But let’s see what can be done to fix this.

So you have speedy broadband, a Windows 10 machine that’s fully up to date and you’re using the latest chromium incarnation of the Edge browser?

What location are you using for your “downloads destination”, is it the default “downloads folder” on a local drive?

Having said all that, if you are able to download the Sync3 firmware successfully, and using the exact same process the maps are failing, then I’d also be suspicious of Fords servers. As you are probably being pushed to download from European servers then maybe try at midnight or the early hours when loads will be lighter.

Hi Catman50

same boat have waited for an age to get the maps update, finally it's available and just cannot download it.  Never had this issue before, normally they just download.

will try daily and maybe Ford's servers will sort themselves out.

I phoned my Ford dealer yesterday and left a message to phone me back, will see what they have to say if they get back to me.

Andy, When I downloaded the Sync3 firmware I downloading to my desktop initially then extracting the zip files and copied to a 36gb flash drive.

Sounds like you have a decent Ford dealer Graham. Hang on to him they are a rare breed.

Hi John.

Ford dealers are not the cheapest but I have had good service from mine, the chap I spoke to said he may even take it home to download the files as his computer is better than the one he uses at work.

Update 09.30am    1-9-21

Just had a phone call from my Ford Dealer to say he couldn't download the maps from the Ford website ether. He said he had tried it from his office and at home but no luck. He has emailed Ford and is waiting for a reply.

I understand the frustration...... It's probably Ford's servers and the fact that the Sync 3 update is 3+ gb and the map update is 22gb.

I've just parted with my old Mk3.5 Focus and bought a Mk4 Focus Titanium X

I had no trouble downloading and installing a Sync3 3.4 update, and also got told that there was a map update available

After a number of "fails" I did manage to get it downloaded  and unzipped  to my desktop, and its now sitting on a 32gb thumb drive.

Can any one tell me if this is correct before embarking on a 80-90 min install !

I have the following files

A SyncMyRide Folder with 18 tar.gz files in it.

A autoinstall.lst file

Hi Anthony.

According to Ford instructions (see attached) you should only have the files listed :-

"Note: To enable a proper update process please make sure that only the following is present on the USB flash drive: • The folder with the title “SyncMyRide” • One file “autoinstall.lst” • One file “DONTINDX.MSA” The unzip tool should automatically create all these files on the USB Flash Drive (root directory). If not, please ensure you extract the complete main package and not just some of the individual folders and files."

That looks ok. The SyncMyRide folder can have a different number of files in it each time. My last update only had 8 tar.gz files in there.

Ideally you would have an empty DONOTINDEX.MSA file in the same location as autoinstall.lst but it won't matter if that is missing, it just prevents Sync from trying to index the files on the stick as if they were music. If it is missing it might delay the start of the install by a few minutes but the installation is likely to take an hour and a half so a few extra minutes won't matter.

The autoinstall.lst file is just a text file. If you open it with NOTEPAD or a similar text editor you can read the contents. It should list all of the files that are in the SyncMyRide folder with Item1= Open1= etc in front of the file names and a few Options = lines. Don't alter this file.

@Catman50 I have tried the download again this evening and it started to download immediately. Would be worth you trying as something has been changed at Ford's end. I won't know until tomorrow if it has downloaded successfully as my broadband is slower than a dead snail.

I was under the impression that it was the software update which was ***** up some systems? This is only a map update, the software version stays the same (as far as I can tell as I am still downloading it).

Thanks Catman50,

Ford Sync & Maps Support have confirmed in a chat session that SyncMyRide folder and autoinstall.list is correct.

I have since uploaded the new F10 Maps into My Sync 3 3.4 successfully.

DON'T FORGET TO DISABLE ENGINE SHUTDOWN OPTION  ( because of the 90min + install ! )

My download has completed for Sync 3.0. The list of files looks correct for a map update (not a software update), the contents of Autoinstall.lst look correct. Version codes of the map files have increased by one letter (from BF to BG or from BE to BF) so this looks like being the F10 map as I currently have F9.

The only thing that looks slightly odd is that one of the files JR3T-14G421-BG.tar.gz has reduced in size from 16.2Gb to 14.9Gb when I would expect a new map to have more detail than an older map and therefore a bigger file size.

I have a long journey planned for Saturday so I will try to install the new map then, unless anyone else installs earlier and reports a problem here.

Up Date 17.00 3/9/21

Tried again this afternoon and I am glad to say the Maps have downloaded.

It took about 15mins for the zip file and a few minutes to extract the files.

I just need to go down to my Ford dealer to get my Flash drive back so I can transfer them to the car.

Wizz - Thanks for reminding me about disabling the engine shutdown I can leave the engine running in the garage (I have a rear door to extract the fumes)

Paul - Thanks for confirming your download worked it prompted me to try again. I have attached a list of the downloaded file, do they look the same as yours

Mine installed ok. Took about 90 minutes. Now have map F10. No problems seen.

@Tiexen Things that seem to work for other people who have had PKG_ERR03:

1. Try the download from Ford  again.

2. Try a different unzip program, I used the one which is built in to Windows 10 - right click on the zip file - Extract All. Extracted directly to the stick.

3. Try a different memory stick. I used a Toshiba branded 64Gb USB 2 stick that I bought from amazon recently. USB 2 sticks seem to work more reliably witch Sync than USB 3 sticks.

4. Try a master reset in the settings of Sync before trying the update.
