Mk4 going thru too much screenwash

Featured Replies

I filled up my screenwash less than 2 weeks ago , it holds a lot , like 3 litres. Got the message today “low washer fluid” it took another 3 litres!  . I don’t see how it can go thru so much so quickly. Gets used a lot this time of year but still . Is this a known problem? I’ve just filled it so I’ll go out and move it shortly see if I can spot any leakage.

  • As you get older these leaks occur more often, it's nothing serious 😲

  • Turns out it was a leaking hose. The door seal got glued back on.  Full service, 2 new tyres , new brakes  Sorted

  • The tank is just in front of the driver's side front wheel. My Mk4 has an undertray though, so it could end up coming out somewhere else.

Yeh that defo does not seem right. I hope it not the same issue as the MK3 with the washer pump leaking.

Do you have headlight washers?

Do you use scented additive? If so, do you get a constant, strong smell of it in the car?

Might also be worth checking the boot to see if it's leaking into the boot.

Try the washers on a dry day, for an extended period, and look under the car to see where the liquid is coming down from. This may help to see if it's leaking from anywhere other than the drains.

No. Did later mk4s have them?

It’s 36k Mile service is due in a few weeks. I’ll get them to check it out. Up on a ramp would maybe be best way to spot it. Idk

Its 3 years is up in October, I assume it’d be a warranty job?

Pretty confident the question was asked as 'headlight washers' quickly drain the screenwash water reservoir...

I bought screenwash from B&Q a few months ago. Very strong smell, could smell it in the car. Like cheap rum !

Had some rain here today , forecast is Looking better tho for checking for puddles on my drive.  Any guesses where abouts it might be leaking from?

I would try as it's not that old.

My Mk4 has an undertray though, so it could end up coming out somewhere else.

The other place to look is on the underside of the Bonnet, although it may have a sound deafening tray. There are a few connections there and is the second most likely place for a leak.

The jets are right up by the scuttle panel on the mk4 rather than on top. It looks like the pipes go inside the frame of the bonnet in one picture.

Anything with adaptive LED lights has them.  Couldn't remember if the STLX had the light upgrade or not.

But if you're going through that much screenwash without then it does seem like a leak somewhere.

Yes, the Tubing is clipped to the underside of the Bonnet on mine under the sound deafening and there is one Tee and one L connector. It is then fed through a Box Section the short way to each Jet.

It's a bit fiddly taking the clips off without dropping them but you don't need to take them all off.

Don't forget that the natural drain point from the windscreen, you will see the excess water come out under the wheel arch at the rear of the front wheel unless your drain points are blocked with debris.

Took this photo this morning.

That's right under the tank, does it smell like screenwash?

It could be a cracked tank, or split hose, or just a connector on the tank come undone.

Only way to know is usually for the arch liner to come off to get to it and check.

Didn’t think to check. Doh

this was first thing , it’s dry today so I think that’s enough evidence. After that I was in Tesco for 10 mins came back to the car , definite signs of leakage ..

There is a lot of dog walkers around here !

Known issue on early Mk4s, along with many other issues.

Can be either

Washer hose disconnected

or pump leaking

You'll need to take the wheel off  and wheel arch liner out

Thanks Dave but it’s a lease car so they probably wouldn’t allow me to fix it myself…..even if I could.

It should have warranty then, if it's leased. Book it in
