2015 focus 1.5tdci failing to start HELP

May be a stupid thing to say but have you ever had the fuel filter replaced? I don’t think I’ve heard of it causing it to not start, but I suppose anything is possible.

  • You don't need a License unless you want to do Configuration and Programming. There should be a PID for Fuel Rail Pressure at the Common Rail but probably not much for the Fuel Pump  itself.

  • If these have a tank pump, you may be able to manually run that using Forscan.  The 1.6 TDCIs didn't but I think the 1.5s do? I've done it on my Golf to prime after a fuel filter change using VCD

  • You need to use FORScan on a laptop with a good ELM327(modified) connection cable. Download FORScan (It's free for use on a laptop): https://forscan.org/download.html TunnelRat Electronics E

This is what the voltage is don't change during turning over Screenshot_2022-09-05-19-29-36-65_99c04817c0de5652397fc8b56c3b3817.thumb.jpg.2c074dc2de4b00d9d7b543785f5f717f.jpg

One of them should show a pressure reading, probably in Kpa or bar.  Not sure what the voltage one is for.

Any idea

Now, that is interesting.

The bottom one is desired pressure - what the PCM is requesting for the engine to start.  (About 300-350 bar)

The middle one should be roughly following that line, but doesn't move at all, suggesting no pressure change.

If there is genuinely no pressure difference, something major has happened.  I guess the first physical check would be the plugs on the fuel rail and fuel pressure regulator.  I take it you can't see any diesel leaks anywhere?  Personally I'd also be inclined to remove the top cambelt cover to check the belt is still intact and check the fuel pump sprocket hasn't failed.

@iantt Can you confirm if there's a tank pump on the 1.5 TDCI Mk3.5?

The plugs you mean come loose electrical plugs

Also I was going to look at the filter but the line to it one you push the white bit in to release it came off the one you have to pull the clip up I can't get off

Yes, that's right.  Though I've just double checked and I don't know if either will be accessible from the top of the engine on the 1.5.  The fuel rail is about half way down at the back, but there's a lot of other guff bolted around it.

That's an awkward one.  You have to pull up the centre part with a screwdriver or something, then push down the outer part to release the pipe.

Is there anything else to check there were no signs of bad running or anything before it happened

Honestly, we need Ian (or another 1.5 expert) to confirm whether there's a tank pump on these or not.  That will change the next steps for diagnosis.

I am surprised that you haven't got a 'low fuel pressure' code in the PCM at all.  That's the usual sign of a clogged filter or fuel pump failure.

I suppose you could check your handbook for a fuel pump fuse if you're at a loose end.  Obviously there will only be a fuse if your car has a tank pump though.

There is a fuse for a pump under glove box there was a error on the pcm but I accidentally erased it then when I scan now there is no codes even after trying to start it

I also loosened these whilst turning the engine but no diesel came out

I really wouldn't recommend that on a CR engine due to the pressures that are usually in the system, although that does at least confirm that there's no pressure in the rail.  Still we need to know if there's a tank pump...if there is, then we need that to work before going any further.  Did you check the pump fuse in the fusebox with a multimeter?

  • Author

No I took it out and looked fine no.56 20a fuse will look again later on

I will look at the filter later see if any particles are in it what's best way to get air out after as I can't see that fuel pump prime you was on about in the settings

I know it's frustrating but we really do need to wait for someone to confirm the tank pump.  If there's no pump priming procedure, then you could probably just switch the ignition on and off a few times.  But if the tank pump isn't working anyway (assuming one is fitted), there's really no point trying to prime the system until we can get to the bottom of that.

Hi all just an update it's in the garage warranty purposes the AA came out to tow it there lovely polish guy he said let me look over it again he got it started my tapping the fuel pump but whatever he did he said you need to do this everytime you want to start it any ideas what he did exactly he said normally one person stands near the pump under the back seat whilst one cranking or something but he did it in his own will keep you informed but he said 100 million percent it's the pump in the tank he had to bridge something as he was on his own

Screenshot_2022-09-08-17-26-39-60_e307a3f9df9f380ebaf106e1dc980bb6.jpg

I suspect one of the windings has failed in the pump.  So it'll spin on the remaining windings once started.  But won't start when it's sat still against the failed windings.  (Same effect as a faulty starter motor.)

Hopefully a new tank pump will be all that's needed.

Yeh I believe he bridged the connection then hit it ? He was def under the back seat

He probably just put a constant live to the pump, instead of the usual ignition switched live.

Yeh the only issue I can see is that under the seat there is no access to the pump where it use to have a cut out in older cars it's got like a funny material over it I suspect thin metal with sound proofing

Yeah, generally have to drop the tank to replace the pump on many modern cars.

At least it sounds like it's covered by warranty in your case?

Wouldn't say it's easy to drop the tank on any car tbh.  It's straightforward but time consuming, awkward and heavy, especially if you've got a lot of fuel in the tank.

Isn't the garage doing it under warranty?

Just an update they have said that the car has been starting ok and road test was ok with the old pump still fitted can they just get stuck sometimes I am due to collect it later I will chuck some diesel cleaner in it and also get the fuel filter replaced what you think
