Locking wheel nut key issue

Featured Replies

I was reading through the paperwork at home yesterday, a few hours after I drove away from the main dealer in my new Fiesta, and a box saying "Yes" was the answer to the question: "Have you received the locking wheel nut?" This was news to me, because all I got were 2 keys.

I fired off an e-mail to the salesman asking about the whereabouts of this locking wheel nut and asked how am I going to get it, because I don't live locally to the dealer. Am waiting to hear back from him! Not a great impression.

  • *18mm.  The standard wrench won't undo them when the cap comes off.

  • Yeah.  Eventually the wheels fall off.

  • It might be a percentage, rather than a straight 20Nm.   Either way, it seems unnecessarily complicated.  As long as the wheels are remaining tight and not bending the hubs then I'm sure it's fin

The dealer usually leaves the locking nut socket in the glovebox or armrest box or with the spare wheel or mobility pump/goo in the boot.

normally in a plastic bag with a card with the key code on it.

You should also have a small funnel to fuel from a can in an emergency.

My new Febi nuts arrived today, they look identical to the originals, only difference being the caps on my originals were a bit loose, as in they rattle on the steel nut underneath. These new ones don't move at all. The originals might have been the same when new though I suppose.

Time will tell if they have the same rounding issues I had with the original nuts. Fingers crossed they won't 😆

Has anyone ever bought a new locking wheel nut key online?

I've seen various websites and ebay sellers that claim to sell new keys. Are they any good? I'm debating ordering one from an ebay seller called vw_base. It only needs to work 4 times to take the nuts off then they're going in the bin to be fair.

My local tyre place couldn't remove them and my nearest dealer is an hour away. I phoned them and they gave me the website they use (https://shop.mcgard.de/en). When I try and put the number in it just loads forever, doesn't work unfortunately

Do you know anyone that can weld?  If they'd been done up too tight for normal 'hammer and socket' method then one alternative is welding a normal nut on top, then just unscrewing the whole thing together using that nut.

McGard do sell keys but it's not cheap and takes a few weeks to deliver iirc.

Unfortunately no but that's a good tip thanks. The parts bloke I spoke to from TrustFord Carlisle said the new key is 36 quid from McGard, I'd be happy to pay that to be fair if their site would work.

Sadly by the time I've driven an hour there and back for them to use their master key it will have cost a lot more than that in time and petrol

Two threads running on locking wheel nuts today.  Not sure if you've seen this post on the other one?  They offer new keys but at £45.99 it's not cheap.  No idea if theirs are better quality than the eBay ones.

I hadn't seen that, thanks for linking. I emailed McGard and they said that some codes don't work on their website but you can order via email:

price: one key €21.18, two keys €32.28

Strangely cheap considering the dealer told me it would be 36 quid, perhaps they add a markup? I am not sure if that price includes shipping, they gave two shipping methods via DHL. One is seemingly free (surprisingly given they are coming from Germany), the express shipping is 37eur though.

3-6 working days delivery for the standard shipping, but perhaps it takes them a week or so before they actually ship it. The dealer did tell me it takes a few weeks to arrive

The dealers probably do add a markup but you may also be liable for VAT at 20% when importing from an EU country.  If it gets held up at customs, that can cause a few days delay.

  • 2 weeks later...

My new key arrived from Mcgard today. Dealer told me if they ordered it it would cost £36 and take a few weeks to arrive. My code wouldn't work on their site but I was able to order via email, in total it cost me £18.10 with free shipping somehow (from Germany). No customs issues/duty and it arrived after only 4/5 days.

I have to say I am very impressed. I might even keep the lockers on now that I know how easy and cheap it is to get a proper OEM replacement key if I need it in future. It's actually cheaper than buying 4 Ford OEM nuts to replace the lockers with!
