IKP
Hello Just purchased Mondeo Titanium Estate 2.0 Tdci Mk4 year 2008 but need help on two things please? 1. Seems to be diesel fumes inside the car, does not seem so bad if I start the car with the fan off but wonder why these fumes are being dragged into the car, leaves a taste in the mouth, any ideas? Ford garage said it was missing rubber on the bulkhead which has now been re-placed... 2. Creaking when driving along, seems to be coming from passenger side front left, any ideas? Ford garage told me it was the glove box which they removed and re-fitted but still got a noise. Just sold a Mk3 which did not make a noise at all...strange. Thank you for your help
mondeo161
The fumes are potentially dangerous so if the replaced bulkhead rubber has not made any difference that issue must be sorted pretty quick and I would say don't make any long journeys whilst you have this problem. Try removing the glove box yourself and leave it out when driving. If the noise is gone then maybe it had not been fitted properly in the first place. MONDEO TXS 2.2
Diesel fumes in the cabin could be caused by leaking injectors & / or fuel filter ?
IKP
Thank you for replies. Done a bit more re-search and car is puffing out smoke about 30 seconds after start up, (white smoke). Going to try and clean the EGR valve. Also going along at 40mph in 4th gear and engine seems to be missing. Going to add a bottle of Forte into the tank and take for a run. Do you think this engine could be choked up? Only had the car two weeks so not sure if it has been used for short journeys. Thanks for all your help
MONDEO TXS 2.2
White smoke can indicate unburnt diesel and / or water in diesel
MONDEO TXS 2.2
It could be coked up - take it for a high rev high speed blast for 20 odd miles - don't use 5th or 6th gear
pragmatix
Black smoke is unburnt diesel, blue smoke is oil, white is water/ condensation
MONDEO TXS 2.2
Sorry Pete, black smoke can indicate an air / fuel imbalance, not unburnt diesel The air / fuel imbalance is either too much fuel & not enough air or too much fuel & enough air White smoke is raw unburnt diesel vaporising on the hot exhaust and / or water in the fuel
pragmatix
I stand by my statement, http://www.dieselsmoke.com.au
MONDEO TXS 2.2
Your link confirms black smoke is incorrect combustion which indeed can be caused by an incorrect fuel / air ratio as stated in symptoms 3 & 6 on the list It does not state unburnt fuel - further down, listed under white smoke issues is unburnt fuel
MONDEO TXS 2.2
Further to the above, excessive black smoke, which basically is high levels of soot / carbon emitted from a diesel engine and can be attributed to the engine running rich, the definition of which is, too much fuel being combusted ( burnt ) without sufficient oxygen to ensure correct combustion, resulting in the discolouration the exhaust gases Soot / carbon is a by product of combusted ( burnt ) fuel The fact is that the fuel is being combusted, or there would be no black smoke , and therefore means it cannot be unburnt I am not being argumentative in any way Pete but I feel it's important to all that seek advice on this forum, that the correct facts are stated The link you posted is indeed correct - however I disagree, based on fact & not just my opinion , with your interpretation of it You are indeed correct on the cause of blue smoke emanating from an exhaust
pragmatix
Ok we will settle on black smoke incomplete combustion
MONDEO TXS 2.2
Ok we will settle on black smoke incorrect or incomplete combustion * Edited for factual accuracy :)
MONDEO TXS 2.2
Has anyone ever wondered how the Red Arrows produce those colourful smoke trails ? It happens when the pilot injects a quantity of diesel into the very hot jet's exhaust & as the laws of chemistry state it cannot burn, it consequently vapourises creating white smoke as it is unburnt, the white smoke is then dyed with either red or blue dye on the demand of the pilot
Wappygixer
My mrs Firsta tdci had the same symptoms regarding fumes in the cabin. It was an injector seal. Dead easy to spot. Open the bonnet, remove the black cover on top of the engine, if an injector is leaking into the engine bay you will see dampness around the base of the injector body. It's a pretty easy fix and quite cheap. It cost £20 to do all 4 injectors on the Fiesta (that was doing it myself). What ever the cause is though you may also want to replace the cabin filter as it will be tainted with fuel fumes.
jeebowhite
Must admit I have had this issue on occasion! I get the same thing where if the fan is on, it occasionally drops the scent into the car. I dont find it happens regularly though!

mondeo161
Hi Stefan. How would you know about the challenger Tank?
jeebowhite
Stef takes anything apart and leaves it all over the kitchen and dining room floor, engines, gearboxes, clutches, challenger tanks...
ade01
if you brought from a garage under the sales of goods act they have to repair or replace so i would get on to them and tell them to do the jobs or you will reject the car and will want your money back
stef123
Hi Stefan. How would you know about the challenger Tank? I have been in and around them a few times with the army. A few years ago now but still remember those days well. Stef takes anything apart and leaves it all over the kitchen and dining room floor, engines, gearboxes, clutches, challenger tanks... James, sadly a challenger tank is something I have never dismantled in the kitchen or anywhere else for that matter however, if anyone would like to donate one to me I will happily rip it apart
