I sold the car 3 months after making this thread.  Bought a Mk3 Focus which was even worse.  Then sold that and bought a Golf.

      It snapped on my wife's 1.8 petrol (MK2) and caused a vibration as well as a horrible metallic twisting sound when power was initially applied.  The garage welding it back on did the trick.
