citroen c5 is crap bad driving position and bad for failing mots like all citroen/peugot plagued with faulty electrics which is why they sell so cheap.

the passat forget it bad for water leaking into the footwell and destroying the convenience unit expensive to fix the gutters on the windows front and rear need constant cleaning to prevent leaks vw parts are extortionate and there services cost a fortune to get the belt done the whole front end of the car has to come off not a job to do youreself unless youre experienced (i had a passat my mate done it for me ) i could go on but i wont i got rid of it for my focus which is a better car in many ways.the golfs the same not as reliable as you think.

from the list themazda would be my car of choice and the volvo second i would nt personally touch the rest with a barge pole and i mean that in the sincerest possible way the volvo is a very good car though it is a focus underneath ive driven a mazda petrol with 180k on the clock and it was smooth as a babys backside bulletproof is the word i would use

volvo s40 It uses the same platform as the Ford Focus so is composed and surefooted on the road - however it lacks the sophistication of some saloons and doesn't feel as agile. It's good value though and comes well equipped for the money while there's a choice of some strong engines including the excellent D5 diesel and T5 that's shared with the Ford Focus ST.

While Volvo has a good reputation for reliability and build quality, there have been numerous recalls for the S40 including potential problems with braking and the fuel pump. We've heard from several owners with problem cars (mostly earlier models) too, although many S40 owners have experienced trouble-free ownership.

citroen c5 A significant facelift in 2004 brought improvements in build quality, but overall it lagged behind the competition. The latest version feels much better built, uses proven diesel engines and is well finished inside. This should translate into improved reliability, though time will tell if this is actually the case.

mazda There should be nothing to worry about here. The old Mazda6 proved itself to be one of the most reliable cars on the market – problems were few and far between. This version should build on that – there are no causes for concern.

passat dont believe the reviews having owned a petrol and a diesel they are junk all suffer from bad leaks in the fotwell causing expensive damage a belt change will cost 600 quid plus ive had friends get a service bill of over a grand on regularly maintained cars i beg you dont touch them

mazda is my top choice my only trouble with them is that they seem to facelift them at least once a week! if i buy a new car i want it to remain exclusive for at least a month before they add something else onto it. the 2.2d engine has been tweaked in this latest facelift and now gives slightly less bhp (180) from (185) it does however produce more torque and less co2. volvo was my 2nd choice the r-design body kit looks the part but the interior does look drab and the engine is rather uninspiring. i think it's mazda all the way!

The Mazda 6 is built on the same platform as the Mondeo. Obviously, bigger than the S40, but S40 R Design would be my choice any day of the week, unless you have a need for a bigger car. That, and the Mazda diesel isn't all that efficient from what I've heard and read.

My choice would be the mazda... cracking looking car in my opinion!

Volvo is a bit of a boat to drive according to my parents... they had a 1.8 petrol (2005 model) and found it dull and unprecise to drive. That engine is a good 'un though, shared with the x-type jag. They had one of those and that engine pulled very well indeed and returned good MPG.

Can't really comment on the others :)

if you want reliabilty good looks sportiness comfort etc its the mazda all the way mate my old man was a ford nut owning almost all of the oldies from escorts to capris etc then he went to the dark side ie japanese and hasnt looked back since the mazda is as bullet proof a motor as youll get and the engines can go forever if they are looked after even neglected ones go for a fair bit the 180k one had barekly seen a service in its klife it was a great car to drive the volvo is basically a focus so if you dont want a ford the volvo is 65 percent ford mazda you wont be dissapointed

Ford had a rather large stake in Mazda until recently - they had essential control of the company with a 33% stake, which the reliquished with Mazda buying back a portion of the shares.

Much of what Mazda is today, is Ford's doing, thanks to massive synergies and cost-saving exercises.

Yeah, they do represent decent value for money. I'd take a 3 or 6 over the Civic or Accord any day of the week!

all ican say is after the crap i had with vws i wouldnt touch them again the early cars ie 90s cars are not too bad but the cars from 98- are just awful and vw if we think ford rob us wait till you see vw prices ludicrous so they are well out of the list i mean i traded my vw in for a focus as after a year i couldnt put up with it anymore all you need to do is log on to the passat forum and youll get the same stuff over and over again defo mazda the volvo at a push if i had no option between a vw and a citroen ide very grudgingly pick a vw if i had to

If it was me, volvo s40 r-design 2.4 or d5(180bhp) because im a speed freak.

Using my brain id buy a toyota auris T180 but check the re-call has been done and get a stonking warrenty on it.

Using my heart id buy another focus but a 115bhp tdci sport or save up and get a mondeo st220 saloon in black with red leather B)

Would never ever as long as there is breath left in my body own a french car (unreliable) or a vw (pipe and slippers)

We had a passat as a hire car a bit ago, 2.0 tdi bluemotion, absolutely lovely car

Massive thing, the boot was ridiculously huge. Felt very nice to sit in and legroom was in abundance!

thats the problem they are comfy and big with plenty of toys but wait till you need the belt done and an independant says okay ill do it for 500 quid and vw say ill do it for 650 quid basically grill headlights wheel arch liners and whole front bumper off then half a dozen wires oil cooler pipes etc have to be moved then th efront end can be undone and put in service position but carefully or you can twist it then engine covers varios other bits finally you get to the belt but the tensioner of which there are 2 are still a mare to get to its easy a 2 day job other than that they are bad for leaks in the pass footwell where guess what under the carpet is the computer that controls alarm windows climatronic etc that gets ruined. they are bad for electrics and aircon failures my aircon went i got an independant to look at it 750 quid was the cheapest qoute i could get vw 1200 quid they are common for failing too common.

mine had a full vw history with it in 1 year i replaced both cv joints and boots spark plugs oli/air filter rear brake flexi hoses timing belt and tensioners springs front and rear wheel bearings a strut all the control arms on the front theres 4 each wheel at 60 quid each as well as c clamps drop links etc etc.

and it aint just me my mates audi which is basically a passat had 1300 spent on it in a year if you own a vw youll ahve a service history and reciepts at least 3 inches thick there was 9 of us with vw ...3 passats and 2 audis 1 skoda 2 golfs and a bora none of us own one anymore and 3 of my neighbours got rid of theres all down to cost if you have a new one with 3 year warranty ide sell it after the 3 years is up even a simple key is 180 quid so yeah they are good cars if you wanna spend every penny you have maintaining them.

mazda 6 all the way
