USB is only for 'mass storage' devices, USB sticks or mp3 players (including iPod Shuffle) when activated in storage mode (effectively turning them in to mini hard drives) For an iPod the USB cable is to display artist information, playlists & skip tracks, the aux cable is for the sound.
