Focus Mk 2.5 Rear Brakes.

Hi Guys,

I have a question about the rear brakes on my Focus that I hope someone can answer.

It's a 2008 Mk 2.5, and I've bought a new set of pads and discs for the rear. the outboard pad has a backing paper on them, so I assume the idea is you remove this and the pad then "sticks" to the calliper?

I would normally coat the back of the pads with a film of copper grease - first time I've ever seen an adhesive on he back!

I assume the calliper must have to be super clean to allow the adhesive to stick to it properly?.

i thinks that's the idea although i prefer to use the copper grease method as i think that the idea of some pads supplied with the adhesive is to keep the pad from any slight movement when is use to minimize any brake squeal noises (i could be wrong but i think that's the idea of the adhesive).

I only use the copper grease because Im use to it and have always used in in the past. (on my older fiesta and escort i actually just cleaned the caliper and set the pads in). I also found that too mush grease and the dust and grit stick to it. so i use just a dab of the stuff.

also having a look through the Haynes manual it does not mention sticky adhesive on the pads just copper grease so i guess it whatever you way you want to use but both methods have the same idea i think.

what make of pads do you use in your focus and wheres the best place to go for price?

I'm a bit of a parts snob I suppose and for things like brakes I always use genuine Ford, so they are Motorcraft. I source them from FordPartsUk, and for a set of discs and pads delivered was £101. I know the likes of Europarts etc are much cheaper, but I always feel that genuine Ford are better and last longer, but there are those who will argue!

I'll give the sticky paper a go first, then can always revert back to the tried and trusted copper grease if need be. In all my experience I've never seen this before though!

Ford offers 2 different brands of brake pads.

The Original Ford (FoMoCo) brake pads are factory fitted on all new cars and are actually quite good. The Original Ford brake pads can be bought as a replacement part but they are quite expensive. As a cheaper alternative Ford also offers the Motorcraft brake pads. These are rebranded Bosch brake pads. In my opinion the Motorcraft/bosch brake pads are rubbish. They will definetely last longer because they are really hard but are also known to cause sqealing noises when braking.

The cheaper Motorcraft brake pads are often sold online as the Original Ford brake pads which they are not.

I used to have Motorcraft brake pads on the rear combined with Brembo brake discs. The Motorcraft brake pads are too hard. The results are sqealing noises after a while and brake discs which are worn quicker than the brake pads. I replaced the Motorcraft brake pads for Textar brake pads which in my opinion are a lot better.

The sticky paper at the back of the motorcraft brake pads (also known as anti sqealing shims)worked fine for me. These anti sqealing shims can also be bought online as a seperate part. I used them both on the front and the rear brakes without any problems.

Thanks for the advice, I was unaware thete was 2 brands available from Ford. When I replaced the rears about 2 years ago, which were the originals, I could have sworn they were Motorcraft, but I could be wrong.

I have them now so I'll fit them, but thanks for the heads up.
