MPX309
I was going to get a cat back cobra system, and we were discussing custom exhausts, as he suggested going to somewhere for a de-cat, and I told him I wanted to keep my cat, and then that's when he mentioned they're the same thing? Phil 87
De-cat means the cat is removed, cat-back means the new exhaust goes from the cat backwards, so not the same thing (also de-cat isn't road legal).
MPX309
thought as much. Cat back it is then
Will-MK7
The only thing you could do is get a full exhaust system but get one with a sports car which will get you through an MOT. Sent from my iPhone using Ford OC
Phil 87
There is another thing I don't understand which is related to this which is, what is the difference between a resonated and non-resonated exhaust? Am I right in thinking resonated is quieter because it blocks some sound frequencies? And can you tell by looking at an exhaust whether it's resonated or not? Looking at some photos there is sometimes a part in between that cat and the back box which I think is the resonator, but if that's the case then what is the back box for? Does the back box also act as a resonator?
tn.nielsen
You are right Phil, non resonated is louder, the extra thing on the resonated is a "mittle box" that remove some of the sound. I got a metal and have just removed my mittle box, sounds so sweat now. Moongouse makes some nice exhaust, resonate/non resonated(catback) and cheaper then milltek and mountune ect.
Phil 87
Thanks Tim. The reason I asked about that is because I'm looking at the new Mountune exhaust, which if you look at the photos it doesn't have that part in the middle: http://www.mountunestore.com/collections/mk7-fiesta-st/products/fiesta-b299st-cat-back-exhaust I assume this means all the sound reduction happens in the back box? (which they call the "rear silencer" in the description) I should have another look at the standard exhaust to see if it has the middle silencer too. Will-MK7
The back box is the only part of the exhaust that had a box on it all the other pipes are straight through for non resenated exhaust. Where as on a resonated exhaust it has a silencer on the start of the exhaust, then the s bend pipe, then the back box. Milltek do a resonated one for £550. And try J-W-Racing for the mountune exhaust it's cheaper aswell! Sent from my iPhone using Ford OC
Phil 87
It's a bit confusing, does this mean that the Mountune exhaust in non-resonated? Although I've heard that it's not as loud as other systems. Thanks for the tip about J-W Racing, I might buy it from them. If they have this exhaust in stock and Mountune don't, I wonder if J-W bought loads of them knowing how popular they would be... MarksST
The mountune exhaust is non resonated, the way they have made the rear silencer is why it is quieter. If mountune have no stock I doubt my of their resellers will either, surprised they are letting him sell at that price, unless he based his add on last years ford fair price.
Phil 87
^ I'll give them a call and see if they actually have it in stock, and just to make sure it's exactly the same as what Mountune sell on their site. I would have thought once a company has bought some stock with the intention of selling it, they can charge what they want for it can't they? I could be wrong of course, I don't really know anything about what rules they would have to follow.
Will-MK7
Yeah mate it is non resonated but I hope it's not too loud, some of the reviews on mountune website say that it isn't that loud when your cruising around anyway. No problem I sent J-W an email about some parts cause I was looking at spending quite abit of money on there and they said they can sort a discount on anything but mountune products haha. But he didn't say to me it wasn't in stock just had to pay the price it is on there website. I don't know but say they brought loads of them of mountune themselves they would have got them discounted anyway? So maybe that's why they are cheaper? Phil 87
To be fair I want it to be quite loud, just not to the point where it'll wake everyone up if I'm driving past houses at 30 mph lol. The stock exhaust is too quiet, as anyone who has seen these things racing around Silverstone will know. All you can hear is a bit of intake and turbo noise from a distance.
Phil 87
I called J-W and they said they are in the same boat as everyone else, waiting for the Mountune exhaust to become available again. Will did you already order the exhaust from J-W or other Mountune parts?
Will-MK7
Yeah mate, you get abit more noise from the mp215 kit but it's only more intake noise which is nice letting off the throttle and an exhaust drone. I was hoping that cause when I had a full system on my old car my girlfriend said she could hear me coming before I turned into the close haha! Hopefully it just adds the noise the car deserves! No I haven't yet, cause I don't know if I want to get my performance stuff first of do some visual things haha, but I think I may wait as the mountune stuff I was looking came to £900 haha. MarksST
If your going to buy mountune parts either wait till ford fair as they have parts on offer or buy direct from them, delivery will be quicker and you earn reward points, £900 will get you nearly £50 towards something else.
Phil 87
^ I only want the exhaust for now, and if another company are selling the same thing for a bit less I'd probably go with them. I usually prefer to buy direct though like you say, but while the exhausts are out of stock there's not much we can do. I was hoping to get it in time for Ford Fair, or maybe they'll be selling them (and fitting them) on the day.
tn.nielsen
Phil 87 The metal edition and the st have the same exhaust system, same diameter .. Box in the middle and backbox, I have cut out the middle box and replaced it with a "racetube"(strait pipe) from sportex. It´s a little smaller and fits perfect inside the standart exhaust, then slam on a clamp, tighten the bolts and enjoy ur "new" sports exhaust 80£ total ;) The mountune exhaust will ba a little louder do to its stainless steel(cost 10 times more) Will try and make a video if u want to hear it
Phil 87
^ I didn't know the ST exhaust was the same as the Metal but that makes sense. And yes it would be good to see a video of yours :)
MarksST
The ST and Fiesta Metal exhausts are not the same, the only similarity will be it follows a similar route under the car.
Will-MK7
They aren't exactly the same, as my S1600 had a similar system to my St, but the first silencer was smaller and a different shape to the St Sent from my iPhone using Ford OC
tn.nielsen
MarksST Are u sure? Mine looks just like the standart one.. the one on the metal is a 2 1/4"(55mm inside diameter/zetec S 47mm) sorry if Im wrong Will-mk7 Was ur s1600 the 120hk or the 134 hk?
MarksST
Well if they look the same they must be ok, strange that all the exhaust manfacturers make different exhausts for the ST and mk7 ZS. I'll order the mk7 ZS catback from mountune now and save £150, cheers.
