nwsavvy
Hi All, Help please, I have an odd squeeky sort of sound from the rear n/s suspension. Replaced subframe bushes and roll bar bushes so not that. If I jack up off side rear then as the suspension drops I get a sort of dry squeeky sound. I seems to be from the top of the strut but cannot be sure. When I go over sleepn policemen bumbs I get the same sound as the wheel drops and returns. Any ideas please and how difficult to remove the strut? Not afraid of any spanner work as done everything from the 60's on my own cars/bikes. If I can remove the strut I can whip it across to the garage and he will strip and rebuild the strut for me. Thanks all. :)
stef123
The rear struts are really straight forward to remove on the rear of the mk3, the strut and hub assembly come out in one piece.
nwsavvy
Thanks Stef. Is it just the 3 bottom link bolts and where are the top bolts please? do I strip the boot liner? Sorry I have returned the Haynes to the library. No probs with the brakes as I have had those off anyway before. Barrie
stef123
Yeah the link bolts at the bottom and from memory there are just 2 bolts for the top mount - accessed from the wheel arch. Its been a little while since I have done any work on the rear of a mk3 but it is quite simple and easy to work on.
nwsavvy
Many thanks. I have a pair of spring clamps, good ones, some say you need 2 sets. Have you any idea's? as I say can allways ask garage guy across the road,he helped me with the subframe bushes etc for £50.00 and we did it together, easier on the lift!! stef123
I'm not really sure about that as I no longer use wind up spring clamps - I use a hydraulic unit now. I would hazard a guess that one set is enough for the rear ones. The front ones I would say possibly as the strut is too large to get out without compressing it slightly. nwsavvy
Sorted. It wasn't the top strut mount after all.As I said we changed the subframe bushes and roll bar bushes. Turns out the roll bar bushes were squeaking, a spray with silicone spray after loosening the clamps sorted it. Done along with oil and filter change.
