Problems turning the ignition key

Hi all,

I have a C-Max 2008 that has developed a frustrating problem.

Every now and then (and it is getting more frequent) when I try to start the car, the key turns just fine to the 3rd position and everything powers correctly, but it will not turn to the last stop to engage the starter motor. If I remove the key, then re-insert it again and sometimes wiggle gently whilst turning it does eventually work. Sometimes it works as normal.

I've tried both keys and they both behave the same.

Has anyone experienced this before?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Probably a worn barrel.
Have the keys been used equally?
If one key is less worn down then it's best to get a new barrel matched to the key and get the most worn key blade replaced as well.
There are barrel refurb kits available but can be fiddly to build up correctly.

Hi,

No, the backup key has only ever been used a few times before.

If it were a worn barrel, would that not stop it turning at all? It only gets stuck when moving to the last position.

I would say that the barrel is toast tbh.

A rebuild kit should solve this.

As others have said, it could be the barrel that is worn. 
The alternative to this is that the switch behind has worn or broken. I had this same issue in a 2003 Astra and a 1996 Mondeo and it was the switch at fault.
