HOW TO Retrofit genuine parking sensors to MK3+MK3.5 Focus

Featured Replies

I'm Phil by the way! You're tagging Wilco in your replies to me 🙂

you can see the wires coming through, but you can't see the grommet because there's soundproofing in the way. You can feel it though.

The loom almost immediately forks after it comes through the firewall.

Next dry day with time available I'll get the battery box out and untape the grommet. I'm hoping I might be able to feed this new loom through alongside the existing wires. If not, I may have to resort to poking a hole in the grommet then sealing it up with some silicone after I've fed in the loom and run it to the bumper.

I'm so close I can taste it lol!

Thanks to @Bannko 's guide and help from @Phil21185 and @Tommo17 I now have automated parking. I actually got it working a couple of weeks ago, but wanted to test it fully.  I used @Phil21185 gui

The driver still needs to use the accelerator and brake, plus gear select but the car will steer itself into the gap. If you use automated parking the car will tell you when to select ‘reverse’ or ‘fi

Haha Damn it. Not sure why I’ve done that. Sorry @JW1982 if this works. And I decide to kee my focus a bit longer. Adaptive cruise and traffic sign recognition with lane keep assist may next be on the cards.

That's going to take a lot more work I'm afraid. You need the cameras and lasers for the windscreen, plus wiring and lane keep assist I think uses bumper radars. If you're going that far, you might as well add blis and city stop!

Edit: actually I think you need a different windscreen as well...?

Yours will be the most kitted out but leaky focus around 😄

I’ve sourced all parts for less than £200 windscreen is tricky not seen one used yet so if it’s a new one required I don’t think I’d bother. Nothing extra in the bumper. All at the windscreen. 3 extra modules. Some clips, cover and jumper wires.

Soo, £500 for £350 of optional extras?

Haha. Well I’ve connected the 8 front sensor wires to the connector. Pin 31 had an outgoing cable. But nothing on the end I connected to. So god knows what that’s doing. I’ve just put mine in a row that was free. I checked the grommet. No way through other than putting a hole through and re sealing. Called it a day it’s pitch black and the wife’s nagging. Good news is. If I undo the 4 I put in from the switch to the c23 I can reach the switch direct from the PAM.

a new windscreen £150?

If you declare to your insurance that you have upgraded and put lane assist etc on, see how much that costs. If it does nothing to your premium then great, then unfortunately a week or 2 later your windscreen gets hit by a stone on the motorway and needs replaced - insurance company order up one with the desired spec for £75

It's a little cheeky but [emoji2371]

Insurance fraud = a little cheeky. Gotcha! 😂

@Phil21185 did you happen to have the same. A pin in 31? But nothing on the other end.

If you're talking about the plug behind the glovebox and the interior half of it then yes.

Did you just place your pins in a row also?

No, if you read my earlier post it kinda explains it.

What I did was ensure that the wires went from the PAM plug in the boot to the plug in the passenger footwell. They did. They also terminated in the type of pin I need for the bumper plug.

So what I did was remove the 8 wires from the plug (the interior side, not the side that is clipped to the firewall) and cut them. That was pins 24 to 32, so 31 was included. Pin 31 should have been Yellow-Orange and is the common ground for the sensors.

I used the pins and tails to make my new loom. It has those pins at one end which are going to be added to the bumper plug and the other end is bare wires which I'm going to hardwire directly back onto the wires I've just cut, effectively bypassing the plug in the footwell, for the sensors at least. Everything else will remain as it was.

This is acceptable to me as there is unlikely to be a scenario where I need to disconnect the sensors again, and if I really do, I'll just cut them. This way I only needed to source 8 pins and I've done it in a way which doesn't compromise any other wiring. Win-win!

When you say there is no way through the grommet, did you remove all the tape from it and there was still no space?

If poking a hole in it and resealing is the only way to go then that grommet will have to be really clean for the sealant to take.

I get you now. Pins should be 25 to 31 ? Not 24 to 32 ? That would give you 9 and not 8 required. Or have I missed something 😂

I didn’t try getting the tape off as there is no easy way to get to it from with in. CT1 will take to it even if it’s wet. That stuff will stick a brick to a swimming pool floor.

I wouldn’t be overly concerned with a slight hole in that. It will never get water in that position anyways.

kinda just wish I took my cables straight to engine connector for easiness. Was trying to keep to original as much as possible.

No definitely 8 wires, but I was wrong - its 25 to 32.

Common supply, common ground, then one signal wire for each sensor.

As for my confusing wiring, Im obviously going to match colour for colour at the footwell end, as thats where I've cut the pins off.  At the bumper end, I'll just match the colours to the bumper harness - the wires for the foglights already match between the engine connector and the new bumper loom so I wont move those.  I can refer to the schematic if the colours dont match, to figure out which wire should go where.

Shouldn't be too difficult.  Then just a case of testing each sensor to make sure the correct one responds.

Here is the relevant part of the schematic.  Pin numbers are given along the lines of connection, after the connector number.  There is a faceview of each connector later in the pdf so you can see what it is supposed to look like.  For example, the signal wire for the front left SAPP sensor runs from pin 9 at the PAM, to 28 at the footwell connector, to 7 at the bumper.

I don't have sensors on my MK3.5 but I did retrofit the reverse camera. I have zero intention of doing the sensor mod but this thread is so interesting! Really great information guys, maybe 1 day I might take the plunge and do rear sensors but I would have to start from absolute ground zero and it seems pretty daunting!

Great work though!!

Take it you don’t have the plugs in the back ? So far it’s been straight forward.

@Phil21185 rang ford today they want £70 + vat for the 2 sensors 😳 I’m not willing to spend that on 2 sensors.

I don't think I do, is that the plug that is behind the flap on the osr wing?

No mate you can’t see it without taking the carpet trim off.

easier way to tell is go take a look under your rear bumper on drivers side you will see a plug

if 2 plugs like in the picture one is for BLind spot (Blis) and other for sensors.

Ouch!! There's mark-up, then there's robbery!

Then, of course there's Ford...

You'll just have to get lucky with second hand I guess.... I was pretty lucky in getting the loom and sensors in the right colour, just waiting to have the last bracket sprayed.

You could always approach a local breaker and see if they've got some in stock?

I'll keep an eye out.

For those following, ABS sensors can be found almost anywhere cheaper than Ford (theres a surprise).

You need FACET 21.0186. £11 each from a fair few online retailers - AutoDoc and their sister websites.

MUCH LATER EDIT: after thinking I'd ordered the wrong ones and much farting about (during which AutoDoc were very helpful) these are the right ones, but don't be an idiot like me and forget to change the sensor type in the BCM, just as Bannko describes.

There are also other apparently equivalent sensors available for roughly the same price, but I cannot be certain that they are correct. The above ones worked for me.

Nice one Phil I just looked at some last night wasn’t sure if they would be the same. Think I’ll have to bite the bullet and buy the sensors from ford for the SAPA as I’m not sure what’s going to happen if I don’t fit them and I activate just the front and not SAPA with the wires in place. Might throw a fault.

Well you could at least test the ones you have. If there is a problem it'll tell you when you first start the car. In which case the difference may just be the fitment.

@Tommo17

There is a difference.

The Yellow plug on the left is SAPP. The black one on the right is one of the other sensors (didn't notice which to be honest) but the plugs are keyed differently (see where the notch is) so your sensor wouldn't fit without modification in any case.

Thanks pal. I seen my loom was different colour like yours for the outer ones. But my sensors fitted on fine. Hopefully can track them down tomorrow.

checked sold items on eBay before and seen Full windscreen set up sold for £90 jumper cables. Clips brackets the works. I’d of had that if I seen it.

how you getting on with your sensors

Just means the sensors have been de-keyed.

As I say they may just function in exactly the same way as the others, and it's just the body depth that is different, probably due to where the sensor is on the bumper. It might be acceptably bodgeable!

Local shoppe sprayed my bracket so now just a dry day without wife and kids to do it.

Possibly tomorrow between lectures and school pick up!

I am quite prepared to pierce and seal the large rubber grommet if needed, but I'm going to undo the sealing tape engine side and see what's what. Might be able to feed in there. One of the loom forks on the inside from that grommet is encased in a split conduit that has a little bit of room in, so the new wiring may well feed in nicely through there.

Still haven't ordered my abs sensors yet so I hope that doesn't throw a fault as long as I don't push the auto park button.
