How To: Focus MK3 SYNC 3 upgrade for Bluetooth Voice Control (BVC) cars from 2011, 2012 and 2013

Featured Replies

Hi there does it work with a 2015 Ford focus, I’ve bought cables off of Ali express and eBay but none seem to work stereo lights up etc but can’t turn controls down nothing at all with them, do these need reprogrammed??? I thought at least would have volume on unit but not steering controls atleast ??

  • Thanks Luke. Your guide inspired me to see if it can be done. I must admit it took around 6 days to write up the guide, an hour per day when I got chance! Did you end up on SYNC 3 in the end

No sync at all

Hi Rowan, I have been reccomended to contact you.

I have a 2012 1.6tdci hatchback. There is no Sync but instead I have BT Connect. Rear & Front sensors Auto park assist factory fitted. , sat Nav and a silly 4 inch screen.

I have the oppoertunity to purchase a tron IXP92FSF Xtrons unit. compatible with ford focus mk3, contains all cables and accessories,

Will this be straight forward replaacement for whar I have?

I'm in the Borders, are you located nearby.  Thanks for looking.

Hi all - I fitted sync 2 to my Daughters 2012 focus a couple of years ago.

(Thanks for the how to jpw👍)

all working fine, apart the message that keeps popping up, everytime she starts the car EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE UNAVAILABLE. Or words to that effect can any of you clever people help me out please its driving her crazy and she is me.

This issue is often caused by RCM internal software or calibration level not compatible with the APIM,you need to update or replace it,this has been mentioned in this thread.

Hi,

Im also looking forward to convert my 2012 bt/vc to sync 3. The options that are installed on my car are: steering wheel controls, cruise control (not adaptive), automatic AC, parking sensors (front and back), automatic parallel parking (guess thats all?).

I already found and ordered:

  • screen + acm + apim + bracket (combo)
  • faccia with hazard + locking button
  • gps with fakra connector (or am i able to use my original antenna since i already got Nav (with outdated sd-card) on my old screen)
  • sync 3 usb hub that fits into the armrest compartment (original usb + line-in in glovebox (maybe original can be replaced?))
  • OBD2 forscan usb-adapter/programmer

The last thing i need is the cable harness, i dont like the idea of cutting my cars original wiring so im looking for some plug and play. Does someone has a link for an good working harness? i came across a lot of harness with the same discription but loads of differents... so im kinda lost now.

can someone answer my questions or give me some advise (maybe i forgot something?)

Greetings Ramon

edit: I also dont have as build files since i dont know how find the VIN-number of a car maching mine.

I'm following up on my own thread here - ha!

My sister has purchased a 64 plate ford B-MAX but it's a Zetec model and doesn't come with BVC or SYNC1. Therefore, no bluetooth module.

Looking at two options - retrofit the bluetooth module/parts or just going for SYNC3 and buying the touchscreen.

I know that some Zetec's had BVC as its a factory option so I'm hoping the wiring is there.

Thoughts?

So i have also finished the conversion.

I did order the cable harness from AliExpress but that one wasnt correct, it took some time to redo the full harness but it worked for me.

I wasnt able to get my hand on the as-build files so i “programmed” it by trail and error.

After the programming was done the screen says “usb hub not supported”, but after updating to sync version 3.4 with the cyanlabs synupdater it started working.

When im puting the car in reverse its trying to show me the reverse cam while i dont have one, but not fixing that now because im planning on getting one.

Only thing i like to fix is the message at startup: “emergency assist not available“ , my car does originaly not have any emergancy assist as far as i know. i did disable it in the APIM with forscan and also disabled it in the screen settings itself. Is there an workaround to like force disable it?

So, a nice way to bump up an old thread.  I’ve recently bought a 2012 Focus Titanium without nav, but with the 4 inch colour display,  I too and wanting to fit at least sync2 as I have bought a complete unit with all the brackets for £20 on eBay (I know, one bid and I won it!) on the basis I would probably just buy a cheap Chinese CarPlay interface for the sync2 screen.

I cannot get my head around this wiring loom. I think I’ve messaged someone on here that they have made a plug and play loom, I’ve also contacted someone on here recommended from AliExpress and asked them to complete me a loom.  Is there any looms that are off the shelf that are confirmed to work?  I am quite competent, albeit colour blind, but it’s been a little while since I’ve done anything like this (I retrofitted Sony Nav to my Mk7.5 Fiesta ST about 8 years ago) and I’ve done plenty of wiring stuffs, I feel it’s the spreadsheet I cannot get my head around, otherwise I’d of just popped off the covers of the connectors and re pin the main harnesses straight out the bat.

id rather have the plug and play option, or does anyone have any guides to this spreadsheet/wiring, either a video or something.  I don’t know if I’m just having a brain *****, but I cannot get my head around the spreadsheet.

Another BTV/C conversion.

Hi JPW, what a cracking spread sheet you created, must have taken you hours.

Now I have a 2012 Focus 1.6RDCI with BVC, rear & front sensors, Sat nav adaptive cruise control. Smart park assist etc etc.

I fitted an xtrons IXP92XSF Trons, At first all seemed well but I have now discoveres that the Voice control button and the Red and Green telephone buttons are not mapped to the Xtrons unit. This means I cannot make a hands free call.  Is there a fix for this.

I am considering going back to my original Sony unit and I am seeking a conversion for a rear camera to my original set-up. I'll have to managewith my 4" screen but what the hec.

Have you any help for me,

Many thanks

George.

No problem at all, I really appreciate your help!

So, from what I can see, when removing the original Sony head unit (ignoring the Fakra connectors and front fascia buttons for now), I’m left with three main connectors:

• One going to the amplifier unit

• One to the original 4” display

• One to the old Bluetooth module (this one being the large 54-pin connector)

That 54-pin connector going to the Bluetooth module looks like it can be split and re-pinned pretty easily, it doesn’t seem like I’ll need to buy any extra harnesses, which is great.

Just to confirm, am I right in thinking I don’t need to touch the amplifier wiring or the wiring going to the old 4” screen?

As for the 54-pin connector: not all pins are populated, I think there are only about 13 wires in total (you can see in the picture I’ve attached).

So, thinking about this logically, it seems like I just need to move those existing wires to the correct positions on the new connector, and then add around 6 extra wires that will run to the back of the new amplifier unit?

I’ll be honest , I’m struggling to make sense of the spreadsheet, I just can’t seem to wrap my head around it.

Would you be able to break it down for me in simple steps? Like:

• Move pin 1 to pin 5

• Move pin 2 to pin 9

• Insert new wire into pin 6 and connect it to [x] on the new amp

That kind of thing would really help me out. Thanks again, you’ve been a legend already!

Actually @JPW, ignore the above, I think I've actually managed to work it out (albeit took me a little while for the penny to drop)

However, I have one concern.  I have two extra cables on my BVM connector (so far that's the only one I've checked)

Do I just disconnect those extras and disregard (as they're not on the spreadsheet) or leave them plugged in where they are?

Anything not mentioned can be left as-is unless you are doing something specific  👍

So, as far as I can see, I can move the main original BVM harness around, split the old 4 inch display harness and move two of those pins to the fascia connector and add 6 of the female to female cables for the back of the accessory connector of the audio control module.

and obviously a splice for the canbus on OBD.

And, any extra cables I have that aren’t mentioned in the spreadsheet I just ignore.

this weekend, out come the tools.

I've sat and deciphered your spreadsheet in a more visually represented way for re-pinning the original BVM connector.  Does this look about right?

@JPW

success!

I thoroughly went over the schematics including printing out the original BVC 54 pin out schematic and the new Sync2/3 schematic and cross referenced everything bit by bit.

I actually managed to do it all by moving the original pins around (including taking the needed pins out of the old 4in display module and putting them in the 54 pin connector) with the only splice I needed to do was the 8 pin fascia adapter.

all seems well and all is booting. Bluetooth connects (but no BT or AUX audio yet, going to sort that hopefully tomorrow), climate works, will be doing the reversing camera soon, all seems well in “Sync” land, and now I can happily invest in a Sync3 unit knowing it’s simply plug and play.

also, I have the emergency call fault. Going to try downloading the new updated calibration using UCDS, if not just disabling it.

do you know why the aux/audio doesn’t work at all? Is this something you came across when retrofitting this unit? It’s been driving me mad, and I’ve had just about enough of pulling the 54 pin connector apart to double check everything’s in correctly. My ForScan config I have attached, I can see the audio processor (and throws a fault that the config is incomplete/incompatible) but I can’t see the sync unit on a full scan.

I have spliced into my OBD for the CAN wires, so that shouldn’t be a problem. I must be missing something surely?

How are you getting on?

  • 4 weeks later...

Hi All- just thought I would add a bit of info I've found, regarding EMERGENCY ASSIST UNAVAIBLE message. If you go into the RCM 737-02-01 Xxxx xxxx xx and change X to 8 it should work. I have done this on 2 different cars and it worked

Are there any harnesses to make this plug and play, I don’t like the idea of cutting up the wires while still under warranty, but CarPlay is a must for me with the amount I am in the car

Your profile says you have a 2013 Focus. Think the manufactures warranty might have just expired 🤣

Just bought pre owned with 3 month warranty

Great guide. Iv just brought my first st 2012 and plan on upgrading to sync 3. One question is what do you do about the door lock buttons. Do you just have to sacrifice not having them?
