Cam belt change

Featured Replies

I tried using an endoscope, purchased from eurocarparts, on my daughters car. It was totally unsuitable due to the inability to guide it, lack of space between the sump and strainer, poor focusing capability and shape of the shroud around the strainer gauze.

The debris eventually removed was not just big and black, but also lots of translucent fibres/matting blocking the mesh.

I was lucky enough to buy a second hand Norbar Highwayman 5:1 torque multiplier in super condition for less than £150. My intention was to sell it on, but it's so nice I may just put it on display in my lounge 🙂

In that case, I'd recommend looking for something with a lifetime chain instead of a belt.  Suzuki Swift for example.   Some chain driven engines also have common faults (generally tensioner faul

The 1.0 ecoboost engine does not have a timing chain, or a rubber belt on the outside of the engine. They use a rubber/synthetic belt inside the engine that runs in oil known as a Wet Belt. The 1.0 ecoboost has two wet belts, one to drive the oil pump and one is the timing belt.

Sorry to be a pain, but you seem to know what your talking about, the ECOBOOST 2013 fiesta with the oil light on, how could I now if the engine is toast, or worth changing the oil pump?(brought the car with it on unsure or services or time driven after the light came on)

thanks in advance

Hi, assuming you have a 1.0 Ecoboost, then if the oil light is on and the engine has been run for more than just a couple of minutes then I'm sorry to say the engine is probably beyond saving.

Once the oil pressure warning light comes on with an Ecoboost engine in most cases damage will have already been done. If the engine is then allowed to continue to run with the oil light on the rate at which serious damage occurs is very quick. To try and save it would take an immense amount of time and an unknown amount of parts. There is one guy here who had to rebuild the same engine 3 times before he could get it nearly back to being 'normal'.

Changing the oil pump will unfortunately not solve the problem. The wet timing belt, and the sump oil pick-up will require replacement. The bits of rubber from the disintegrating belts will have spread through the engine blocking oil galleries and clogging  up the very small gauze filter that feeds oil to the turbo.

A brand new 1.0 Ecoboost engine can be supplied and fitted for example by PumaSpeed for around £3300 which is possibly the most cost effective answer.

What's the cost of a 10 Yr service compared to the belt snapping .A major service in a main dealer is approx £300, my 8 Yr old  fiesta  is just coming  up to 40k but with the amount of miles I do nowadays won't get to 50k by the 10 Yr mark, so for me it's worth replacing.

I don't think that they "snap" more the belt sheds rubber and clogs the oil strainer in the sump which starves the engine of oil

regular oil changes (yearly) with Ford oil should help - why Ford introduced 2 year services is beyond me

It is quite stupid that Ford in the UK ‘recommend’ services every two years. It should be annually @ the very minimum. Here in Australia it is annually, or six months if using the car in ‘adverse’ conditions.

I do have a 2013 with the 1.25 engine, that has been ok however it’s only done 35k.Might have to dust off the  old V reg 1.25 zetec sitting in the garden!

Good news for some

Well yes I suppose, if you live in America and drive a 1.0 Ecoboost Automatic and your car is a 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021.

Not so good news if you don't live in America, or you drive a manual.
