Difference between petrol and diesel prices - May 2023

I've noticed in the last week that there is only 1p/litre difference in diesel and petrol prices at my local petrol station (拢1.44 and 拢1.45)

Does anyone know why the difference has reduced so much, so quickly?聽 Petrol used to be 10% cheaper until very recently.

I'm particularly interested because if/when I change my car, which might be later this year, I had been thinking that a 45mpg petrol car is just as cheap to run as a 50mpg diesel car.

So almost exactly the same as my 2.0 diesel. which currently averages around 46mpg. which at the moment works out at 2.97 pence per mile.

So your electric car is costing between 2.92p and 3.65p per mile

45mpg is about 10 miles per litre so makes for easy mental calculation.

It's about 13p per mile atm.

30 years ago maybe...

Glad I spent a decade in diesels.聽 Never would have happened if I'd listened to older relatives.聽 Hate to think how much more I'd have spent in petrol over that decade. 馃槷

Still remember the first time I drove a decent diesel...instant torque and a huge power band from VNT boost.聽 And easy 55-60mpg over a tank.聽 And cheaper road tax.聽 And no need to use the throttle for slow manoeuvre or the handbrake for hill starts.聽 Didn't miss the hassle of the old NA petrol doing 35mpg at all!

(Note, I say decent diesel, as I did learn to drive in a diesel, but it was a 206 with that horrible Ford 1.4 TDCI in it! :whistling:聽)

Yep, that sounds about right! In 1988, I had a company car, a Peugeot 205 1.9 diesel. It was a lovely old beast. all the things you said, and of course, being a 'company' car I never actually paid for a penny of fuel myself. I even remember having to wait for the glow light to extinguish from the dash before starting her up LOL

Still think of the XUD 9 with affection. Had two in Citroen ZXs, one n/a, one turbo. That glowplug light seemed to take ages on a cold morning!聽

Only fault with either was that one glowplug failed in the n/a version (which stayed in the family for 13 years, so can't complain!).

  • 2 weeks later...

Saw it today, 1.42 petrol, 1.43 diesel. There's 2p difference between fuels at one station in my town too.

However I paid, 拢1.37 for Shell unleaded in Whitby and even better got 59 mpg on my dash when I got home.聽聽馃槂

Up at our caravan in the Dales this week, the local (community run) filling station had petrol at 142ppl, but diesel was 140ppl.聽

Diesel still 2/3ppl more than petrol elsewhere round my way, though.
