As for the gauge sweep on the Instrument cluster, it doesn't do a full sweep, the needles just drop below zero and back to zero for this model.

Huh, weird 🤨

I've just tried it on my son's '08 Mk6, and the gauge test does ALL the gauges (including fuel and temp) all at the same time. Firstly they go beyond zero, but then do a FULL sweep.

But of course, that's on a LATE Mk6 (known as a mk6.5)

Also just tried the gauge test on my 2002 Mk3 Mondeo, and that also does a full sweep.

Hi Bobyn, so it's been established that the self test gauge test only moves the needles from zero to rest positions and back again on your version of the Mk6. What does yours actually do?

So on the video I took it does look like it moves slightly and sounds like the motor behind them rotates

That thread from Marineboy is very interesting!

Looks like you might have to break it gently to your mechanic brother that it's looking like the ECU after all.....🤔

That only leaves the engine ECU or wiring from ECU to sensor then.

Given the info in the posts above, looks like it probably is the ECU unfortunately.

They are all security coded to the car so not easy to swap.  Best option is to have yours physically repaired or have it cloned onto another ECU.
