Key Remote Lockin Not Workin

hi all, i have just bought a 1998 2ltr ghia x and the remote locking isnt working. the key fob has 3 buttons and is recently new, apparently it was workin fine untill the previous owner put the old key in and it wipped everything from the new key, now nothing works on the old key either and wont evin start the car, the new key starts the car fine but the doors wont open with the fob, is there a way i can reprogram the fob back to the car so i can get the doors to lock and unlock with the fob? many thanks chris
