Spot The Poor Vauxhall!

I know a van driver who crashed into a tree as result of discarding his butt out the window.

The wind blew it back in and down the front of his open overalls. He didn't think it was still alight, so he ignored it.

It was and started his T-shirt smouldering. Momentarily forgetting he was driving his van,he removed both hands from the steering wheel, and tried patting himself to extinguish the small fire that was going on around his chest/belly area

Approaching a bend with a tree on the bank, still too distracted with his personal bonfire extinguishing, the van mounted the bank and hit the tree.

Luckily I can't bring myself to smoke in my fez... Last car I owned was an Astra (please don't hurt me) and if it was the first cheeky cig of the day, I'd get a nicotine rush (light headed and dazed) while driving. It'd only last a minute or so at the most, but personally I'd say it was comparable to necking a couple of cans and then getting behind the wheel. Smoking and driving should be illegal imho.

That's your opinion. I am an occasional smoker and even after weeks of not touching a cigarette I can smoke a Marlboro Red without any light headedness. But, I know that some do get a "buzz" from nicotine, the same as some get from energy drinks or coffee, but we can't make everything that may impair you illegal, rather the users themselves have to be personally responsible and not put themselves in these situations.

Alcohol has the same detrimental effect on 100% of consumers, so that is perfectly right to be illegal and unacceptable.

For the record, I'm a lot calmer with a cigarette in my hand and with the amount of bad drivers out there I need all the help I can get to stop me murdering one of them!! ;)

Smoking and driving should be illegal imho.

More accidents are caused by fiddling with radios, satnavs, heater controls etc than dropped !Removed! ends.

Some people will rationalise their hatred of smokers by any means.

The only time someone gets hurt by cigarettes around me is when they whine about smokers to my face.

If you don't like me smoking then don't stand by me. Simple answer.

I definitely see your point. At the end of the day, if smoking while driving was made illegal, people would simply do it anyway. A bit like doing 80 on the motorway. Unfortunately though, personal judgement isn't always enough to stop some people doing daft things, hence accidents happen.

I myself am I keen smoker. It is because of this that I am aware of the dangers of smoking and driving. Personally, I believe that occupying your hands with anything other than a steering wheel and a gear stick whilst hurtling round in a ton of metal isn't the safest idea. But each to their own!

Oh yes, definitely. Personally I find people not washing themselves and stinking of body odour to be offensive, but if I have to bite my tongue and not mention it to them, I don't expect anybody to mention my smoking.

As this seems to have become the "smoking and alcohol thread", isn't cannabis less harmful than both tobacco and alcohol? I don't smoke either but I often wonder why cannabis is illegal when those two aren't.

Because it is proven to cause psychosis and damage to brain cells.

It is also linked to higher rates of lung cancer due to a tendency of deeper inhalation of tobacco smoke.

It impairs judgement and reaction times thus substantially increasing the risk of causing a RTC.

...I dare say alcohol has the same effect regarding reaction times etc..

Cannabis can also be eaten, stewed etc, so the cancer reasons aren't necessarily a main topic, also as stated, it's the tobacco rather than the cannabis...

As for psychosis...plenty of life can send people bats**t crazy as well...sometimes S**t happens...

Anyway... Regarding smoking cigarettes, I don't think smoking and driving is particularly safe, as others have said, anything other than driving is a form of distraction - coffee, radio, food, phones etc... But I doubt banning it would solve anything, I've seen an abundance of blokes smoking in work vehicles with no smoking signs on them, Inc taxi drivers!

Smoking in works vehicles is illegal and has been for a couple of years.

TBH as with booster seat laws and smoking with kids in cars it is pretty much unenforceable.

We really don't have the resources to process and prosecute these offences (in the case of booster seats we certainly don't have the powers to start measuring kids at the roadside so a total waste of legislation).

Exactly, there are so many things that are illegal in this country and the police forces are still struggling to deal with stuff that's always been illegal, without the need for new illegal actions... Obviously I'm preaching to the choir... But it's a crazy variation - murder one minute, someone smoking in a car with kids the next.. All grouped as illegal...

Definitely some job variation...

Do you get a lot of people in your line of work in certain make cars doing things wrong.

I mean like racer boys in a corsas or vauxhall.

Thank goodness for decent citizens like that!

I would have called it in as it's technically leaving the scene of an accident.

Good point actually. I wouldn't have but now you put it like that, maybe if I saw something similar in future I would.

Exactly what I thought when I saw the ads.

Well, it is official - Vauxhalls put people off driving!!

I'm pretty sure had he bought him a Fiesta he would have had his licence by now

Had he bought him a peddle car or a little tykes convertible he would have...

Aww ad no longer available, shame it was a print screen..

I quite liked the pleb in some crappy little boy racer corsa today with his gormless buddy, he decided he was staying in the outer rather than moving over so I stayed in the inside lane when we got to traffic lights, he revved a little bit (to show how powerful he thought the exhaust made his tin can sound), so as we pulled away I sat next to him (it was filter in turn soon) I could tell he was going to try and get ahead, so I put my foot down in my 1.6tdci estate.. Turbo whine and he's in the dust...

It's not a powerful engine, but my 1.6 enjoys the little victories...

Good Lord, I hope that doesn't mean somebody actually bought it!
