Churchill012
I have a 2012 Focus Zetec S. Whilst driving listening to my ipod the Speakers made a kind of "pop" noise and then went off. The audio unit was fully workable and the songs were still shown as playing but I had no volume. Same for my phone, sat nav, parking sensors. When I turned the engine off, the sound came on for approx 5 seconds and then "pop" and they went off again. This happens every time I press the start button to turn on the electrics , or start the engine. Likewise when turning it off. The sound from the Speakers is of good quality for this 5 seconds. Wether unrelated, my 20 month old placed a 5p coin into the CD slot a couple of days ago so not sure if this could have been as a result of that? That too is an issue I would appreciate any advice on. I am reluctant to book in with Ford without first trying to gather some information on what the issue may be. Many Thanks. alexp999
The 5p has probably gone in and is shorting something inside the headunit...
Churchill012
Thanks. I had a feeling it could be connected. I'm starting to think that's going to be a very expensive 5p coin.
alexp999
It depends if the car is cutting it out to protect itself, or if it has done some damage. There is a chance that once the 5p is removed it will work fine. I would get it out ASAP though, as the longer it is in there the more chance it has to damage the head unit if it is not already too late. You can do it yourself if you are confident in doing so. The control facia needs to come off in front, then once disconnected you'll find the headunit behind it. There are only a few torx screws holding it together. Just a loading tray and PCB sat in the bottom.
alexp999
You can use this guide to get to it if you want: http://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/38649-guide-to-removinginstalling-sony-stereo-mk3-focus-2011/
Churchill012
Thanks very much for your help. I don't have the confidence to do this myself without causing more damage. Booked in at Ford on Wednesday but at £98.00 per hour. Any advice/suggestions on anywhere else that may be able to deal with this? Or is Ford the best option. Thanks
alexp999
Any garage that you are happy to do the work should be able to do it, if there is one you trust. However, sometimes a Ford dealer you trust not to rip you off (they do exist, lol), can often do the work quicker, which negates the expensive rate they charge, as a local independent may charge half the labour rate, but take twice as long if they don't know what they are doing. It shouldn't take more than half an hour imo. Might be worth agreeing a time/cost before going in, telling them you want a call before they do any extra work. Don't be surprised if they call to say they want somewhere in the region of £400+ for a new headunit though...
WES180
Just follow the guide and remove it yourself, it looks nice and easy. Hopefully the 5p will fall out when you tip the radio over and then you have saved yourself a few hundred pound labour at Fords!
Churchill012
Thanks for all the replies and advice. Grew a pair and had a go myself. Eventually got all three 5p coins out and all is working as it should...For now. Thanks again.
