1997 1.3 fiesta heater problem driving me up the wall!

Featured Replies

Hi folks. Hope you are all well. Im a newbie here so apologies if im posting in the wrong place.

I have brought a mk4 1997 endura e engined fiesta. Im planning on restoring her over the coming months but I have a problem with the heater not blowing hot air into the car. Im a amateur mechanic armed with the trusty haynes manual. Ive done all the usual  checks and replacements of certain parts. Changed thermostat. Checked for coolant leaks. Drained and bled system. There is hot pipes going into hcv and into matrix. Also hot pipes coming out of matrix. Heater blower motor works. Temperature gauge in car running normal. ***** old girl keeps blowing cold air. Im at at loss folks. Thought its time to consult the experts. Any help would be grately appreciated.

I assume you've checked/replaced the heater control valve?

Hot pipes coming out and going in that would lead me to believe the blend door stuck on the cold side.

Thanks for the reply. I havent replaced the hcv because its letting hot coolant through into and out of the matrix. The returning pipe out of the matrix is hot too.

If its the blend door stuck. What would i need to replace? Its all electrics behind the heater control dial on the centre console. Ive had that off hoping it was the old cable style operated. Thanks again for replying.

It's usually the actuator that fails on the blend door. You can usually find them after taking the glove box off, but not 100% sure on a '97. If you can find the actuator, take it off and see if you can turn the door by hand. If you get hot air then you'd need a new actuator.

Having said all of that, I tried to google a replacement and couldn't find anything. Maybe the mk5 is cable driven. I know 2002 onwards (mk6) is 100% electric. Will have to have a look tomorrow and see if microcat has anything.

You are a star. Thanks for helping me out. I really appreciate it. This is next level stuff for me. I wouldnt have a clue. I think mine is a mark 4 i know its 1997. Hopefully its not a ford dealership job. By the sounds of it you will know more than me. Probably worth more as scrap if it is lol.
