Smell Of Overheating Engine

I have an 03 ford fusion that seems to overheat even after a short journey , the temp gauge is on normal but when we looked under the bonnet the smell is overpowering , not a burning smell as such but a really hot smell ,we have to put water in the radiator every week , around a pint, not normal is it ? what could be the cause ?

Simple answer, you have a water leak, top the water up, run the engine and look everywhere for it leaking out, every hose pipe,and by the belts ie the water pump
