Loss Of Compression

Help! My Mondeo has all of a sudden lost compression on number 4 cylinder.Drove to work on Monday night,no problems.Got in it to drive home after work and severe lack of power and poor running was evident.Had mobile mechanic look at it the following day.He removed the plugs and the one from number 4 cylinder was covered in oil.He then did compression test which revealed there was virtually none there. He said probably a broken valve and would cost between £400 & £500 to fix.Does anyone know of a cheaper option as the car only cost £1300 in Jan.It is a 1.8LX on a 51 plate. Not sure if it's worth spending that kind of money on it.Any advice would be greatly appreciated.Thanks.

Remove the head and check for valve and valve seat damage, do a leak test on the head and also check the piston, rings and bore.

If there's oil on the plug I'd be inclined to say the problem is likely rings of valve stem seals.
