Hi,

the Mk2 and Mk2.5 knob are exactly the same fitting on to the metal shaft. I have done to my Mk2, exactly the same as you are considering, except I went with a silver Mk2.5 knob.

There are other things to consider though. The gaiter is fitted to the knob with a different type fixing, I got around that by getting one from fleabay with the gaiter already fitted/included. the fitting of the new gaiter at the bottom also needs a little jiggery pokery to fit, but it's not difficult, and the results are that the newer type knob looks a lot more modern than the original Mk2 one.

Also don't forget when choosing your replacement, some knobs have a lift up collar for reverse, and a different gear pattern on top of the knob.

Phil.

Ide stick with the original but thats just me all the same size but as above some have diffrent gear patterns and lift up collars most though should allow the elasticated gaiter to slip over
