I have done to my Mk2, exactly the same as you are considering, except I went with a silver Mk2.5 knob. There are other things to consider though. The gaiter is fitted to the knob with a different type fixing, I got around that by getting one from fleabay with the gaiter already fitted/included. the fitting of the new gaiter at the bottom also needs a little jiggery pokery to fit, but it's not difficult, and the results are that the newer type knob looks a lot more modern than the original Mk2 one. Also don't forget when choosing your replacement, some knobs have a lift up collar for reverse, and a different gear pattern on top of the knob. Phil.
