Fiesta Boot Release

Hi, I've just bought my lad a Y plate 2001 fiesta. At the bottom of the console-below cigarette lighter area-there is an illuminated button with a picture of a car boot on it. The button doesn't seem to do anything. Any idea what it's for? Thanks in anticipation

Those fiesta I believe do have a boot release button, so it sounds right, but it sounds like the connection isnt there (broken wire perhaps, or bad switch).

Remove the switch and short the connection, see if that trips the boot, if not, then follow the wires back. You might find in the hose that comes out to the boot that the wires are snapped / frayed and shorting out.
