volts
Check update history in Windows Update see which has failed to install if any.
Hyrule
What version of windows are you using, XP, 7, 8? What is the need for using Windows update, is there a specific update/patch you require? I recommend to most people to turn Windows update off unless you specifically need a patch/update. Just install the latest service pack for your OS version and you should be good to go.
Marks12
The version is windows 8 just that it tells me if I want 8.1 then it will need some system updates
Hyrule
If you want to update to Windows 8.1, you can do so without using Windows update/Microsoft store. See link below and follow instructions: http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=42327 As a precautionary measure always backup any important files before the update. jeebowhite
I tend to clear the updates cache, then restart the pc and it tends to work!
Marks12
Thanks for the tips guys I'll try all these when I'm home from work or else the lap top will be flung at a tesco customer service staff
jeebowhite
Haha, they won't be able to do anything get the error code from the update history and Google it for further advice. If all else fails system restore to before the last update, move the download cache to a subfolder then update again

SandyCat
When you get your list of available updates try unticking all but the top one and install that first. If it works reboot the laptop and try again with the rest. If it works great. If it doesn't then repeat above one at a time until they are all done. Wheels93
When installing windows 8.1 if you have got the laptop out the box with windows 8 it wont install straight away. And i am certain i know what to do know you have done a factory reset. Boot into windows 8 as you have been being and move your mouse into the top right hand monitor and you will see a bar appear. Top option is to search, search for windows updates and search for updates. Install the ones that have appeared and then reboot. Once this has been completed you will be able to install windows 8.1 from the store. Unfortunately most people arent aware that when installing 8.1 some prereqs need to be met and these include those updates.
