are they of any use to bog standard motors?

remaps would be pointless on a naturally aspirated petrol as there isn't much improvement that can be made, More gains can be done with turbo petrol/diesel engines

Thats why I asked which engine lol. Not much you can do unless its turbo charged...

A remap on a 1.6 petrol 100bhp zetec will get you approximately a 9bhp increase (or so the companies offering the service claim) which is pointless really. Stainless steel exhausts sound great but again any power increase is negligible. I didn't notice any difference when i had mine fitted to be honest.

Yeah thats what I thought......its a 1.8 petrol....so nothing to be gained for the money

If you want more power sell the car and get one with a more powerful engine. Most aftermarket "upgrades" are expensive and unlikely to offer much in performance terms for money spent.
