i have just bought an escort and the temp gauge show overheat with the ignition off.

i took the thermo out and boiled it in a pan and it worked i tried disconnectng the plugs on the hoses and thermo housing no change i have not run it long enough to see if the fan cuts in when it actually does get hot but when i turn the a/c on the fan kicks in i just dont know what to do cos it may blow the head gasket or may already have the oil looks ok tho any ideas?
