2005 C-max Diagnostic Reading After Fault With Speedo

Hi Guys,

Occasionally when out driving my speedometer will suddenly drop to 0mph when driving down the road. On the little LCD display I receive the 3 following separate messages, I also have an ABS illuminated all of the time which as you will see from the reading below is due to an ABS sensor and tone ring on front offside wheel and rear nearside wheel respectively

  • Steering Assist Failure
  • Engine systems fault
  • Speed LImited Mode

The error with the speedo and above problems only ever seem to show up when the weather is quite humid which seems extremely strange.

Along with this problem I have a constant ABS warning light on which I'm told is an ABS sensor on the front driver side wheel and the Tone ring on rear passenger side wheel.

I have recently purchased a data cable and the following reading appeared via the software.

Can anyone convert this into what the car needs, apart from being sent to a scrap yard!!

===PCM DTC U1039-E3===
Code: U1039 - Vehicle speed signal missing or incorrect

Additional Fault Symptom:
- Signal is Above Maximum Threshold

Status:
- DTC Present at Time of Request
- Malfunction Indicator Lamp is On for this DTC

Module: Powertrain Control Module

Diagnostic Trouble Code details

Vehicle speed signal missing or incorrect

Operator Action

Run self test.

All CMDTCs

Fix all relevant DTCs then clear codes and retest.

Note:

DTCs that start with 'U' are faults which occur during module-to-module communication.

Modules should never be replaced based only on a 'U' code. These codes do not always indicate a problem, and can be caused by normal diagnostic functions, carried out on the vehicle.

===END PCM DTC U1039-E3===

===OBDII DTC U1039-C===
Code: U1039 - Vehicle speed signal missing or incorrect

Status:
- Confirmed - malfunction is confirmed

Module: On Board Diagnostic II

Diagnostic Trouble Code details

Vehicle speed signal missing or incorrect

Operator Action

Run self test.

All CMDTCs

Fix all relevant DTCs then clear codes and retest.

Note:

DTCs that start with 'U' are faults which occur during module-to-module communication.

Modules should never be replaced based only on a 'U' code. These codes do not always indicate a problem, and can be caused by normal diagnostic functions, carried out on the vehicle.

===ABS DTC C1145-A0===
Code: C1145 - Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor Input Circuit Failure

Status:
- Previously Set DTC - Not Present at Time of Request
- Malfunction Indicator Lamp is On for this DTC

Module: Anti-Lock Brake / Traction Control Module

Diagnostic Trouble Code details

Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor Input Circuit Failure

Sensor or module replacement must only be carried out after the following checks are performed.

Check the connector for damage or contamination.

Check for an open circuit in the wiring harness.

The sensor was previously disconnected, check the sensor connector.

Check for a short circuit to the ground or battery.

Check that the supply voltage to the ECU is approximately 12 volts with the ignition in position II.

Disconnect the sensor. Check that the supply voltage at the sensor connector wiring harness is approximately 12 volts, with the ignition in position II.

If there is no voltage the possible fault is the main wiring harness, connector or ECU module.

Sensor replacement must only be carried out after the following checks are performed.

After clearing the DTC, the vehicle must be driven above 20kph (13 mph), during normal driving conditions, to extinguish the ABS lamp.

Additional Information

The ABS lamp should be illuminated.

The ESP lamp should be illuminated.

There will be an ESP malfunction warning displayed on the driver information text panel.

Module: Anti-Lock Brake / Traction Control Module

Diagnostic Trouble Code details

Left Rear Tone Ring Missing Tooth Fault

The code is set normally when the speed from one sensor differs from the speed on the other three sensors. The vehicle speed must exceed 20 kph (13 mph) for this code to be set.

This DTC may be caused by :

Deformation, debris or contamination on the surface of the front wheel bearing seal.

The excitor ring is a steel ring pressed onto the hub. If drums are fitted the hub is integral to the drum. If discs are fitted the hub is mounted onto the disc.

Has anyone had any of these issues with their car, i'm guessing its electrical, just hoping its cheaper to fix than having to have a new ECU installed. Thanks in advance for any help provided.

Hi. I have the exact same problem & fault codes on my 2005 C-Max 2.0 TDCI model. I was wondering if you managed to make any progress in tracking down the problem? The symptoms are identical to yours :-( Looks like I might have to spend big £ on auto electricians if I can't figure this out.

Hi,

Unfortunately not. However from what I could make out the abs problem was down to a sensor on the front wheel, and a tone ring on a rear. As for the dash display going off, I found thru research on google it's a common problem and needs to be sent off to be repaired by specialists. Which costs in the region of £100.

I've now traded the car in as I was fed up of keep having to reset the dash by switching the engine off and back on again.

Hope you get to the bottom of your problems with the cmax

I would be inclined to think a possible cluster fault or water ingress into the GEM fusebox in the passenger footwell behind/underneath the glovebox could be causing your issues although diagnostics would possibly help narrow the issue down.

Agreed, cluster fault is the most likely. the ABS system is used for speed recognition these days so its not like the old days where the VSS could have been the cause.
