Mass Air Flow Sensor

I'm just wondering what would happen if I unplugged this on my petrol zetec? I unplugged this on my 51 plate diesel Punto and it worked wonders, the car was much faster and it didn't affect economy. There were no adverse effects whatsoever. Would it hurt this car if I did the same? Many thanks in advance as usual.

Steve.

If the car gets faster and economy doesn't reduce, the sensor was already broken...  A new sensor would have improved the performance and economy compared to the broken or unplugged one.

I don't think there is a MAF on the 1.6 petrol Focus.  Just MAP and lambda, don't unplug either of those though.

my 2001 focus 1.6 petrol did not have a MAF sensor.

I agree with above. Unplugging MAF normally makes the car use a kind of default reading in place of the MAF sensor reading. It is better than a false reading from a dirty / broken MAF but not as good as the reading from a properly function MAF sensor.

I was surprised to find my Focus did not have one when new

a mate of mine swapped out a MAF sensor on his 1.8 TDCI, holy crap did it fly! I mean it was belching black smoke but it had an impressive pickup on acceleration!

further examination showed that the sensor was reporting considerably more air then was present so was over fuelling it.  good fun but not something you would want to keep :)

Hi Isetta. Any idea what can improve my cars performance and economy? It runs like a dream but I feel it's underperforming and using too much fuel. Maybe something needs renewing? I get about 100 miles from £15 of petrol just running around locally, whereas my diesel Punto would do that on £10. Does that sound right? And fast it isn't, if I floor it (which I don't like to do really) there is nothing impressive going on, my Punto would destroy it. Maybe I'm expecting too much from it? I'm just wondering if this performance and economy is normal for this car.

Thanks in advance.

Not knowing the price of petrol in you area but a quick calculation of that £15 at £1.15 per litre gives 3.29 galls divide your 100 miles this equals 30.39 miles to the gallon which as you say you are only running around locally is not bad for a Focus 1.6. I used to get about the same in mine doing local and a couple of 30 mile trips per week. When I had my last major service that included changing the air filter etc this has improved to 34/35 mpg.

Thanks Thomas, is the performance right? I haven't properly booted this car, but it doesn't seem fast for a twin cam. I used to hammer my cars in my younger days, I'm more respectful now lol. My 68 Escort felt faster than this. I do love the car though, the interior is immaculate, and the drive is smooth as silk. It's lovely for it's age, it just doesn't have any real speed about it.

Hi Steve

Yes seems about right, they are not the quickest 1.6,s as I said give it a major service including plugs and plug leads and a few decent length runs a week and you will notice a better mpg.

I have had a DPF cleaned on my 2016 Ford Focus YP66 FHW which seemed to have worked OK but my computer is saying Engine service is now due. The man who put my DPF on said it was the Mass Airflow Sensor (MAFS) that was causing the problem. I bought one from a breakers yard and fitted it myself after being quoted £85 + £15 fitting by the engineer. The car seems to be running better but still showing the Engine service now due and the engineer still says that the MAFS is the problem and says I need a new one. Am I being misled because I quizzed him over his £85 quote which he said came from Europarts but they are only £73.50 from Ford Dealers. I don't think Europarts have them in stock?  Does running my car with the engine service now due message on it harm it?
