Mk3 Prefacelift Sync 2 8" touchscreen upgrade, How to guide with pics!!!

What do you mean by "dash piece".

The steering wheels work from the wiring of the old small screen display.

Pin 7 from the old small screen display goes to pin 46 on the APIM

Pin 10 from the old small screen display goes to pin 47 on the APIM

I doubt the FoCCCus programme will work on a 2017 car. If it does then these changes need to be made.

123 – Audio Aux Input change the value to 01 (without)
125 – DAB Radio System change the value to 01 (without)
154 – Module USB change the value to 01 (without)
157 – Bluetooth Handsfree change the value to 01 (without)
172 – Front Display change the value to 09 (DM8 with nav)
214 – ICP change the value to 09

The changes can be made using Forscan in Central Configuration. They are just easier to find in FoCCCus programme.

I assume you are trying to fit either a Ford sync 2 or sync 3 screen.

The easiest place to take the MS can is from the heater module. If I remember rightly it's the blue plug.  Pin 18 grey & orange on the heater module goes to pin 16 on the sync module.  P

Thanks! If anyone has any questions I’m more than happy to help!  It took me 10 hours to do but that was with some figuring out along the way, I reckon if I was to do it again I could do it in ha

Firstly I have to say great how to!! Followed it and almost managed to complete the install, I have gone from sync 1 to sync 2 on a Cmax. My issue is with the nav I have managed to get it working with splicing in to the blue plug behind the a/c controller but on the screen the gps sign has a red X through it?! As of yet I have not connected to forscan as waiting on modified elm connector to arrive,20210408_160542.thumb.jpg.2afed90ca28f0ec68edc5a811864206f.jpg

Can't say I know much about the cmax, but the red x means it is not receiving valid GPS. This could be 1 of 2 things. Either it cannot talk to the GPMS module because it is either connected incorrectly or is faulty. Or, I have heard, that an incorrect nav SD card can cause similar issues.

Once you can run Forscan, see if it detects a GPMS module.

The funny thing is it tracks the car ok on the map which suggests its got a signal and the card that is in it is the same one as it says in the nav info?

C-Max is very similar to the Kuga and shares the same dashboard I think. I have upgraded my Kuga from Sync 1 to Sync with full functionality including navigation.

You may have just a few small issues but sounds like you are nearly there.

How did you fix your sync 2 screen to the car @Steve828

@smartguy69 I have not yet fixed it to the dash just making sure i could do it before i commit to cutting away any of the dash

No worries, I haven't fully fitted mine yet and is held in place temporarily. When I come to cutting the dash I took the vents and radio controls off the new radio panel and just took a bit away at a time and made the panel fit. Then I put the vents in and made some adjustments. You have to be careful not to cut too much away. I had all mine cut away but couldn't understand why the panel fitted and then when I put the small control panel in the main panel, it wouldn't fit at the bottom. The mounting screws on the back of it were catching so it wouldn't sit down. It's still not perfect but it will be. My only concern is there isn't a mounting at the very front bottom so will have to improvise.

I put the brackets on my sync 2 screen and cut some slots in the existing dash for it to sit in. My intention is to run a bracket along the bottom of the screen and same at the top. I will take some pics which may help.

I can definitely help you on the wiring/programming side and even though @Steevo25 doesn't know much about the C-Max and Kuga he does know about the Focus and sync 3 programming which isn't much difference from sync 2.

The first thing I would do when you get your ELM 327 is to make this change. You will need to download Forscan and get an extended licence if you haven't already. Your setting for navigation may already have the correct value as you have it on screen.

APIM Check / Change

7D0-01-02  x*xx  xxxx  xxxx

The * should be a 4 - That's the second digit. Take a photograph of your existing settings just in case you change the wrong one.

You may find a few other things don't work but they can all be made good with programming.

Just change ONE thing at a time and test.

You may have to make some changes using FoCCCus programme as well. The changes can be done using Forscan but easier to find in Focccus.

You CD cover will have a light in it. I discovered how to make this work and passed the info onto our other Kuga members. I think the details are also in this thread.

Sync 2 & 3 Retro Fit - CD Player Slot light connection

Correct procedure for connecting CD light.

Insert a new pin in the FCIM radio panel to pin 3. This is live and connects to green wire on CD Player light
Splice a new wire to pin 5 on the FCIM connector. This is earth and goes to black wire on CD Player light. It is possible you could connect from any other earth source.

My ELM 327 should be here tomorrow, as far as I can tell the only things not functioning correctly are the reversing park pilot picture and the bluetooth call thing where they can hear me but I cannot hear them, which reading through the previous post looks like it can be sorted with forscan🤞🤞

Well the ELM327 arrived a day early so I connected it all up and thought I would have a little look at the programming, but I could not for the life of me manage to get it to talk to the car. Tried multiple programmes but non would work, I think I have a dodgy elm327 as tried it on the wife's fiesta and it was the same result😪. Just emailed the seller now through ebay so hope to get replacement or refund

You have installed the drivers properly and can see the elm device in device manager?

Yes I can see the device in the manager its not called elm its called by one of the driver names

In device manager it will be listed in ports as COM2, COM3 or similar and show the driver as being something like ftdi. I only recommend ELM327 made by OHP and Proscan. I do however have one that is a clone which is years old which I paid about £15 for. I now have an OBDLink EX as I found moving the switch bsck and forth a bit of a pain.

If you haven't got bluetooth then I guess you are using the car's original ACM (CD Player). The consensus across most of the forums regarding upgrade to sync 2 or 3 is you have to change the ACM. YOU DO NOT, certainly on the Kuga, but the proper sync 2 or 3 ACM has a rubber bung in the back so I replaced mine just for that reason. I can tell you how to get your original ACM working by changing just one digit.

The graphic for the rear park pilot is down to the architecture being different. It's a while since I done mine but I think also just one digit change.

How to get Bluetooth on sync 2 and 3 using original sync 1 ACM.

The ACM should have an As-Built change when doing a 4" to 8" conversion.

The very first line, very first box in the as-built of the ACM.

727-01-01 Xxxx xxxx xxxx

Have to make sure hex 4 is not enabled.
If you have a F, make it a B
If you have an E, make it an A
If you have a D, make it a 9
If you have a C, make it an 8
If you have a 6, make it a 2
If you have a 5, make it a 1
If you have a 4, make it a 0

The change choices in bold are most commonly seen... if you don't have one of the values listed above, then hex 4 is already disabled on your ACM.

This change tells the ACM which type of APIM you have. So now it knows you have the 8" Touch Screen APIM version versus the older non-touch 4" screen version.

Thanks to the boys on the USA G2Fusions site.

@smartguy69 thanks for the info really cannot wait to get in to the programming now

The ACMs are very different amongst different Ford models. The Kuga ACM is the most flexible. The Focus ACM cannot be modified so it really depends what the CMAX is based on. If it is similar to Kuga then you have options open to you.

I have a Kuga ACM in my Focus but it was not a straight swap as the case of the Kuga ACM is very different to the Focus.

On a Focus style ACM, the Sync 1 ACM works with Sync 2 and 3 without modification but TMC doesn't function as it is single channel on Sync 1 but dual channel on Sync 2 and 3.

Tbh I am fine with not having the TMC if I cannot have it, although the wires from the main acm plug where already switched to the other plug

The C-Max has a similar part number to the Focus for the ACM so may not be able to program for Sync 2. On checking a 2015 C-max running sync 1 it would appear there is no as built data for the ACM.

@Steve828. Did you buy your sync 2 system as a kit including the CD player or just the screen. If you bought just the screen then you will need a sync 2 CD player for the bluetooth to work.

Yes, the cmax seems a bit of a mix. The dash looks similar to a Kuga but when I look in my UCDS scanner, it treats the Focus and cmax as the same car.

It looks like you will be more help to Steve828 than me with it being more similar to Focus. I just checked the asbuilt for a C-max which has sync 2 as standard and again there is no mention of the ACM in the asbuilt file.

By chance I have a sync 2 ACM from a Focus which I didn't use.

I wonder if sync 1 and sync 2 ACM are the same just with different software on the Focus. It is possible to download the sync 2 software for the ACM module but not sure how you would install to ACM. If you ever need any calibration files you can download from fordtechservice. I have the link if it's of any interest. I thought you had to pay for access but I just been in there and downloaded ok.

I only got the screen, apim and usb/sd media hub. Which turned out to be faulty so I had to get another usb/sd media hub. I was hoping to be able to keep my acm as I have the 9 speaker sony system and reading other posts the sound quality is not as good on the sync 2 acm.

I wouldn't say the Sync 2/3 ACM for a Focus is a lesser sound quality. The only issue is that to get a Sync 2/3 ACM, you can only get them from a MK3.5. The MK3.5 base spec is only 6 speakers with no centre speaker. Since the ACM cannot be reconfigured, then that is what you are stuck with (although all your door speakers will still work). The Sync 1 ACM will give you your original sound but TMC will not function.

I have not seen the fitting to a cmax. It would be advantageous if you could post a picture of your current ACM so I can see how it fits.

I will take a picture once I get 10 min what pics do you actually want? The actual acm unit or it in place

I found the centre speaker makes the sound worse - as it's flat, so I disconnected when I purchased the car years ago. Therefore, the newer MK3.5 ACM didn't change anything for me in terms of sound quality as the centre speaker isn't used anyway.

The centre speaker is a bit like Marmite, you either love it or you hate it. If you look on the ST forums you will find many posts and howtos on disconnecting the centre speaker. Until you have tried it, you won't know which you prefer.
