Aerial replacement

I have the 09 titanium tdci.

My aerial had snapped off before purchase. Bought another but can't screw on, checked YouTube videos who explain to remove inside lights (underneath aerial mount) but no video has 09 and removing lights area seems very hard.

 

Any advice very welcome!!

if the interior light is in place correctly you pull the front (nearest the screen) down they almost fall out..... pull the back and you be there the rest of your life as once u get it part way they get stuck and then don't go either back in or out.... then you break it

is a mental design even once the front pops half way it then gets stuck... stop fighting and wiggle a bit then it magically falls out

How do, thanks for responding.

Can't seem to pull the front down, would need a screwdriver for that. Can only take the reflector off

you don't touch the bit you have removed

the whole bit with the switches and alarm sensors is one piece, there is a sprung metal clip in the centre at the front, you might need to tease it off but you should be able to do by hand

Sorry, I've no idea what you mean. The entire rectangula outline is very secure, are you suggesting I force it away, push up and it springs out, what?

the big grey rectangular bit is screwed on to the car.... the "light lens" stays on the lamp unit, the "lamp unit" unclips from the grey rectangle, as shown in the pictures

top picture is the "Front" of the light unit, the "only" retaining clip you need to overcome is shown in stainless one third of the way up the picture, in the middle of front face of the light unit

the other picture shows the two grey plastic locating points for the Rear of the lamp unit, one each end (one close in the picture, the other end blurred)  the smaller white bit is an anomaly in this photo - nothing sticks out - its just the retaining point for an element of the light unit and has NOTHING to do with its removal

After a few jobs on the car you'll get over the "i'm going to break something" mentality. I was the same with my Focus when I first got it, trying to get the ***** pillar trims off to route a dash cam cable.

Ford clips have nothing on VW/Skodas... took me 30 minutes to get the ***** pillar off and a number of lacerations from sharp plastic!

So I got it off. I've had a look inside and I'm not sure how to adjust/unscrew the aerial mount

that's slightly different (but I can imagine same issue), on the antenna how many wires ?

on the single wire cars with a shinier casing for the shield of the antenna wire, it shorts against the bolt and cuts out the antenna  - there's another thread going

on mine I removed the bolt - torx headed - (antenna will likely fall off) and ground off the head slightly, magically (now without shorting) for first time since manufacture the Ariel worked and where I live picks up good signals for all channels.  Before it only had intermittent reception on two

So that little square thing has 2 wires and requires an Allen key but I can't get near it to unscrew it

its NOT a caphead / uses an allen key, its a later fastening the motor industry use called "Torx",  a stupid idea, each time you go to your tool box its almost impossible to get the right size first time. 

They can be damaged use the right tools.... quarter drive socket set with the right torx bit …. this is the easiest job on a car, beside filling with petrol or pumping up the tyres... maybe you need someone to do it for you

Hi all,  after many years of crap radio reception I decided to have a go at this job today.  I got as far as removing the light console and undoing the bolt that holds the aerial down but my setup looks different to that shown in the photos above.  It started to rain so I quickly redid the bolt to stop water getting in though the hole in the roof and will take another look later.  My first thought is to put a piece of rubber gasket around the bolt so the head is isolated from the metal piece leading t the wire - do you think that will to the job? 

I don't really want to end up with water pouring in through the roof so also plan to seal up where the aerial sits on the outside of the roof using grease.  I might change the aerial sometime as well as it is starting to look worse for wear, with some of the foam bits crumbling off.  I don't think that is affecting the reception, what do you think?

that's the standard setup....  

the other picture is one with more toys, the idea is exactly the same...   the silly torx headed bolt is the issue, grind a bit off so the outer casing (20mm round bit with the wire) isn't shorting (making a connection) to the bolt that holds it to the roof (as the short is what stops the Ariel functioning

Thanks, that's the discussion thread I remember seeing but couldn't find it again yesterday.  So now it has finally stopped raining I had another go - I made up a rubber gasket using old bicycle inner tube but that made the bolt too short so had to rig up a longer one with some washers to fit into the aerial base.  I will add a photo to the other thread as it makes more sense there.

I have a small leak somewhere from the roof, just a few drops, I think when car is tilted backwards. I was thinking it might be through the aerial (not sure about that), so I thought to take of inside lights to tighten it from below. These instructions helped (somewhat easier than Haynes at 12-11).

Interesting that Haynes says "Removal and  refitting  of  the aerial requires the   headlining   to   be  removed.   This  is  an involved task, requiring patience and dexterity. Consequently, we recommend you entrust this task to a Ford dealer or upholstery specialist.".

I have done this, and no matter how many times I have seen it done by others, for me, it is a 2 man job! Unless you have arms that are 6ft long LOL I have never managed to hold mount in place whilst simultaneously fastening up the mounting bolt... 🤣

Hi All, 

Very poor radio reception experienced recently on my Fiesta Mk7. 

I am trying to replace the aerial to fit a new one, accessing the base from behind the interior lights. Lights removed, so far so good. 

But a bit of a mystery for the next step: unlike the dozen of videos I have seen online, my aerial base does not seem to be retained by a fixing with a T25 head but by some kind of hollow hex tube with a female thread in it.. Please see picture attached.. 
Seems irremovable, even by using a tube wrench.

Anyone with such a configuration in their car? Any tip on how to remove the base?

Have you tried a 8mm or 10mm socket? 

Looks as though It is shaped on the outside for a socket

Hi, thanks for your reply. 

I have. It will make the whole assembly (ie the black plastic wiring sleeve included) rotate circa 90 degrees before it feels completely stuck again. 
At that point, it really feels like excessive force has to be applied and I am worried it is going to snap / break or cause damage to the wire which is badly pulled at that stage. 
I checked if this was not some kind of 90 degrees lock / unlock system, ie at 90 deg rotation it would unlock the base on the roof, but it does not seem to be the case...

I don't get it..

Now, if it were me, I would grab hold of that black plastic tab whilst turning the 'nut', instinctively, I feel it is turning just because of the friction between it and that odd looking socket thing you appear to have. I can see no reason why it has an internal thread, apart from attaching something else inside it like an additional connection for the aerial, perhaps multi purpose like a GPS signal?? I wonder if your aerial is a standard 'radio' aerial or something more fancy? Hey, in addition, if it was my car, I would take it to my local guy who knows stuff, rather than me eventually bodging it, which as sure as a virus second spike, would happen!

that looks remarkably like mine.....

has he replaced the OLD antenna with the later part, one that supposed to use a different loom and a different fixing ?

the small stainless torx screw is for the early design female antenna mount

the later DAB compatible mount has a male thread sticking down in to the car...    YOU can (as I have) however retain the original antenna lead and use the later male mount, BUT you must make up a special "nut" that doesn't short it out, stopping it working like your appears to in the picture...   I used a modified brake bleed screw (with a hole I threaded) with the tapered end upwards fitting inside the antenna shield but IT MUST NOT TOUCH ANYTHING other than the inner plastic/ mylar part of the original antenna lead
