i regularly drive my 62 plate 2.0 tdci 163 from london to yorkshire .generally not too hard either.  iv had car about 16 mths now and still have no idea if it ever regens. however last week on return trip  i was looking at the onboard computer showing my average mpg dropping from 60 mpg slowly down to 47mpg.  after a while it picked up again to the 60 ish mark. noticed no hot smells   no loud fan noise etc .  so was this a regen as iv read you can lose a lot of mpgs while regenning.

That used to happen to me as well with the mpg, and the only way I could tell that it was doing a regen apart from the cooling fan running fast when I got home - but if you were doing a long motorway trip I guess the engine had time to cool back to normal temp before you got to your destination.

It most probably was. You would only notice the hot smells if you had stopped during or immediately after the Regeneration, and it's unlikely that you would have heard the fan running.

I have monitored an on the road Regeneration taking place with FORScan and the DPF goes back to normal temperature very quickly afterwards.

I would expect that the engine cooling system was designed to cope without alarming drivers.

I think from memory, but might be wrong, that Forscan can show how many miles since last regen
