Meow!!  🙀🙀🙀🙀

First petrol cars 1895, first proper roadside attended petrol station 1920

First production electric car built 1884.

First full electric charging station opened in Essex 2020.

That's a long time to have a flat battery 🤣

Saw a mention of this recently:

https://www.metalectrique.com/alair-system

Don't recall seeing it previously - probably missed it, but interesting nonetheless.

mmm... where we're going, we don't need roads! 🤣

Here's an interesting article on battery development.

Interesting article, loved the bit, "This battery technology could increase the lifetime of electric vehicles to that of the gasoline cars — 10 to 15 years..."

Though my 'gasoline' car is approaching 20 years old, 123,000 miles, and still going strong!

You would have to admit that is fairly uncommon, though (ours is only 13 years old).

The main point of the article is the increased energy density and much faster charge rates, presumably without compromising battery life. It will likely also be less prone to overheating and thermal runaway although I guess it would still pose a significant hazard in a vehicle fire as Lithium is so reactive.

In the UK......

About 5.3 million cars are 15 years old or older, according to figures from car marketplace Auto Trader, up from just 1.7m in 2001. The number is on track to rise to 9.3m by 2032. Cars are ageing in part because of a squeeze on production, which started during the pandemic and is only now beginning to end

Does that mean the plastic Tupperware box known as a Tesla will last forever ??? 🙄

Yep! 🤣🤣 most cars used to rot away after 10 years many years ago. Now we are the throw away nation because it's to expensive to fix cars . I know of 8-10 year old cars that go to scrap yard due to ecoboost engine failures.

I entirely agree that the replacement of an engine will likely put a decent car otherwise off the road. But if you own a standard car, and keep it properly maintained, I see no reason for it to last a very long time.

That's the secret, I'm an enthusiast, so as issues arise, I deal with them (as my appearance on this site will testify). The sad truth is that most folk who own cars treat them like an appliance, if it strands them at the roadside they'll deal with it, but if it just makes a funny noise, or exhibits an odd vibration, well, that'll be ignored.

I'm sure millions of cars have been wasted because the poor things have just been mistreated over their life because of ignorance, or lack of time to deal with. I would always advocate 'repair' as mostly that is more economical than getting a 'new' car...

I have spent £100s on mine over the years, but each time, despite maybe being 'expensive' it's infintely cheaper than getting another.

From memory was it Lada's, Alfa Romeo and Fiats that used to rust for fun on the dockside before and after shipping. Older cars are also more prevalent to to extortionate insurance cost for many, and if its older you dont drive like its wrapped in cotton wool, sunday driving and passing eveything else with a wide berth.

You left out Lancia 🤣

I was reading an article the other day regarding slow payouts from the ULEZ scrappage scheme. The thing that really struck me was the accompanying photo of the cars awaiting dismantling, some of which looked to be in excellent condition.

Bearing in mind that to qualify for a payment of £2000 the car has to meet the criteria below, I wonder why people bother rather than just sell to WBAC, etc.

"To be eligible for a grant payment to scrap or retrofit your vehicle, the vehicle needs to have been registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) to you, at your address, since 30 January 2022 or before. The vehicle must also have valid insurance, road tax and MOT and not meet the ULEZ emissions standards."

Yes, I think the connection was that Fiat and associated companies got some cheap steel from the USSR. Shame, as some of those Lancias were nice cars otherwise for a couple of weeks before crumbling to dust.😀

To get an idea of how common that age is we need to know what percentage it is of the total number of cars on the road. Granted a lot more effort has been put into rustproofing cars in recent years and this does show in the number of older cars that are still around.

Battery technology will continue to evolve, as will the technology of EVs. In a generation they'll be wondering why we persisted so long with IC engines with all the kludges bolted on in increasingly unsuccessful attempts to control emissions.

I remember the 2009 car scrappage scheme. Some really good cars were crushed.

https://uk.motor1.com/news/692596/tiny-engine-no-petrol-diesel/

Yes battery technology is moving at a pace. Yes EV's have their place BUT they are NOT the answer but only part of it.

Far too many slate ICE vehicles. Question. What the hell did you learn to drive in?

As for the longevity of cars. The Japanese manufacturers have the best of it because they made cars to last. I'm a lover of Lexus cars and I know of many many old Lexus cars on the road and still going strong as if they were new.

The link above is part of the answer and I'm personally looking forward to hydrogen introduction to vehicles.

EV's have no soul. They are a means of bland (Yes ruddy quick) transport. ICE vehicles have soul. The sound of an engine when on song is just energising.

Hooe this post gets this thread back on track and the jokers get real and grow up 😁

The accepted figure is around 37 Million on the road so as a %age, 5.3 Million is about 14%
