Why do so many people on here use 'breaking' instead of the correct 'braking'? Is is just a result of auto-complete on mobiles?

I would think so - auto correct won't know the difference. Combine that with predictive text and it's a nightmare. I did a fairly lengthy post on here the other day and spent more time going back and altering the auto corrections than it took to do the original post.

However, I'm told by friends with grandchildren that schools don't seem to correct bad spelling these days - it stifles creativity, apparently - so that could be a factor.

Give them a break 🤣

The one that is bugging me the most is the word "off" as in the opposite of "on" you would think that a three letter word wouldn't  pose too much of an issue.

I was just putting:

"Yes, indeed, or pose too much of an issue"

and the darn thing changed "pose" to "lose" and I had to edit it! 😠

The biggest problem I have is with the spell check on the Fire Fox browser which seems stuck in American English. I uninstalled it, then installed it again. Made sure that it is set for UK English and all was well with the world, for about two weeks and it's defaulted back to American 😧

Jog on sounds a more polite way of using the other word that precedes off 😀

I've been on car forums for over a decade...incorrect spelling of 'brake' was happening long before mobile posting became common.

I doubt people are taught the correct spelling of 'brake' at school level, as it's unlikely to be used with people too young to drive.

Then there are others who have trouble spelling due to dyslexia or other conditions.

Spelling is one of very few things I was actually good at at school...and has been of virtually no use at all in the real world!

Considering the average age on here must be over 50 I'm not sure that's relevant in this case!

TBF i was not long up and eating brekkies while going thru my mail and typing, but yes poor lacsadaisical grammar is everywhere these days even what they teach to the young. Proper english is a dying art, especially on forums and txt speak etc. Come the future we will no longer speak full english but an amalgum of many languages and styles.

The one that really bugs me, which has crept in over the past few years, is when people use the word "of" instead of "have"...ie You would of thought so... etc etc.

How did that happen ??

P.S....iantt, don't you need to change your profile now, or have you still got the Mundano ??

Lol, it was in my day, as we were not permitted to cycle to school unless we had done the Cycling Proficiency. Correct maintenance of bikes (including brakes) was stressed - one of the teachers regularly inspected bikes in the cycle shed. So we all knew what a brake was and how to spell it, as opposed to the break for school milk.

Which goes to prove your other point about average age on here!😀

Slightly embarrassing that I'd forgotten about bicycle brakes. :whistling:

To further complicate things, the catering truck that brought food for break was branded 'BRAKES'...

I think that trend goes back further than the current generation. Maybe I'm just a cynical old f*rt but I suspect that may have more to do with the fact it's extra work and they just can't be bothered.

Yeah, on reflection you're right, Mike. Time seems to fly these days, but I remember back in the 90s having to correct the spelling and grammar of graduate trainees passing through my department. It seemed to come as a surprise to some of them that business correspondence on contractual matters requires a high degree of accuracy!

Back in the 90's I regularly used to find spelling errors in children's books and point them out to the teacher...  In hindsight, perhaps that time would have been better spent learning some social skills.

Looks like you and I have a lot in common.

When I was in primary school (in the year dot) we had regular spelling tests and our work was always corrected (with a red pen). The lack of such rigour in recent years is starting to become evident in published material. Even the proof readers can't spell.
