Given the recent wave of cut backs on equipment on Ford's, this will be an interesting topic in 10 years time when present owners are talking about their 2022 models.

The answers will probably be along these lines.........

"mine has two wipers"

"I've got electric power steering"

"I have the optional Rev Counter"

"It came with a 3 speed heater fan"

But on a (slightly) serious note, it's going to be a heck of a job sorting out members queries then also, when specs have been altering (aka being slashed) every other week!😀

Actually I don’t really see the point in rev counters. I recall someone at work (a young driver) saying to me, but how would you know when to change gear, Well I certainly don’t base it on watching the rev counter.  Might be useful on a racetrack I suppose, but these days you can have rev limiter in ecu so still not really need a rev counter to warn against over revving

Debatable point I guess, everyone will have their own view, but I suppose less important now with wide power/torque spread on modern turbocharged engines particularly if paired with an auto transmission. Being old-fashioned, I still like to have it.

However, I test drove a Toyota Corolla hybrid the other week and was surprised to see a rev counter. I asked the sales exec what was the point of that in a CVT hybrid particularly when the engine is not running anyway for quite a lot of the time, but she had no idea either.

In 1979, I installed a rev counter into my Datsun 120Y. There was no possible logistic reason, barring that I was a boy racer, and that's what we did 40 odd years ago LOL

My first car didn't have a rev counter...in hindsight, that may have explained some of the stalling.  (Although it was mostly moving from diesel to petrol lol!)

Concerned a passenger who thought I was doing 12,000 rpm after picking him up at lunchtime.

I'm sorry but boy racer and Datsun 120Y have no link whatsoever 🤣 The attached is the same colour my father had.Screenshot_20221130_203626_Chrome.thumb.jpg.2fc4757e20f4594603fe35ffd96567bb.jpg

...and the genuine Trans Am eagle on the boot, CB aerial base on the boot lid (CB radio hidden installation in car, before they were legal), alloys (rare in those days), proper go faster stripes,  and the 4 x cibie spotlights on the front you can't see - yes, a real 70s boy racer

Regarding cvt, a lady at work just bought a new Toyota hybrid cvt.  she thought cvt was a new invention. She hadn’t heard of DAF cars over 50 years ago. I know it’s had some extra engineering but it’s the same principle. She said the salesman says it’s just got one gear. I said it’s really the opposite, it’s got an infinite number of gears between the lowest and highest ratio. I had a Volvo 343 with the daf cvt.  it seemed quite good. I thought cvt had fizzled out but it has made a comeback.  I recall Ford Fiesta 1990s?  And fiat uno selecta tried it.

It is, but all sorts of wizardry in there now, as you say. And no rubber bands!

Wasn't there a DAF car on Bangers and Cash a few weeks ago with the same/similar rubber band set up, IIRC they all had a go at trying to explain how it worked and non of them were convincing.

My Gran owned a Daf 66 when I was just a kid. I had no idea then anything about it except I always called it, 'Nans daft car!'...

There was.  I think they were trying to dumb it down, without much success lol.  It's not a complicated process at all in reality.  The drums are cone shaped.  When you push the cones together, the belt runs over a larger area (large gear, low ratio, pulling away), when you pull the cones apart the belt runs around a smaller gear (high ratio, cruising).

Interesting thing about the old style CVT's is that they'll go as fast in reverse as in drive!!  Nowadays CVT/EV reverse speed is electronically limited.

I found it interesting when test driving the Corolla and Civic recently how controllable they were during low speed manoeuvring, compared to a "normal" 2 pedal car.

I had one that I inherited from my grandad - it had been sat a while and the cones must have got stuck because you had to floor it and it held in the lowest gear position for a long time before suddenly jumping to a more sensible ratio.  That probably contributed to the engine exploding a few months later.  Pity cause I had spent ages replacing the sills and filling rusty bodywork to get it through the MOT.

Wouldn't want another car without heated seats and steering wheel and the ability to pre heat/demist the car remotely so it's toasty warm on a cold morning like today. Also quite happy not to ever drive a other ice car.

Back on topic from my last post, I bought this one specifically for the heated windscreen, seats and steering wheel for those cold frosty mornings.  Then moved to 100% home working so don't benefit as much as I thought I would.  Also the tow hitch, difficult to pull the trailer without one.

Interesting comment, Ian. Having spent the best part of the last month having a look around at what's on offer (and failing to be enthused by anything) I can kind of understand that!😀
