(Oil pump belt can't be replaced like this. Don't bodge the job by removing the pickup).

Might sound daft but what do you mean by pick up and the baffle

  • When you fit the new one I would recommend you fit it to the pump first then attach the vacuum pipe to the new valve. The nipple on the valve is easy to break off.

  • It's a pretty crucial pipe unfortunately. The engine will run but the coolant won't be pressurised, it'll boil, and you'll be risking uneven head temps and potentially HGF. If you can tape

  • Are you sure the tensioner requires a T40. On my Focus it's a square and I just used a socket set extension bar and ratchet.

Baffle = Strainer = Gauze = Mesh

All the same thing.

I meant there is a baffle plate bolted to the block adjacent to the oil pump. It's designed to stop oil sloshing up onto the crankshaft and con-rods.

I call the oil pick-up the part that is submerged in the engine oil and has the gauze filter inside. On this engine the pick up is part of the pump and it's not meant to be removed.

Gauze is just an old term for the filter mesh in the pickup. Some call it an oil strainer.

Ahh so don’t use the slide hammer on it then like the video 🤣

I’m guessing that’s the part that all the crap gets stuck then?

I’ve snapped a bolt that goes into what I believe is the ac pump? Now I don’t know what to do

Can you still get the pump off?  It should be alright refitted with one bolt missing.

I like the sound of that😆 but I’m just waiting for a T40 for the belt tensioner

I can’t loosen the belt to get the pump off either 😤

As above, the T40 only holds the roller on.

It's a 1/2" square to relieve the tension iirc.

Yes, half inch extension bar will do it

I’m not sure what you both mean? T40 in the middle of the tensioner where does the half inch go? You mean a half inch of these? image.thumb.jpg.14bb1e1cdfd317a156083a06d1a984f6.jpg

Never mind 🙄 found it thanks guys legends! 🤣

Tbf, I'd totally forgotten the AC pump was bolted to the sump when I suggested dropping it yesterday. :whistling1:

How far have you got now?

  • Author

Unbolted everything on the ac but can’t get it off it’s like it’s stuck still

There are three bolts, if you have removed them the pump should come off.

Provided you now have the belt off, gently tap the pump until it separates. It's probably stuck on the locating diameters due to corrosion.

When off, make sure it's supported and pulled forward towards the grill. This gives more room to manoeuvre the sump. I used a bungee.

I can’t seem to budge it in the slightest could it be due to the snapped bolt

image.thumb.jpg.3a1b1c61f562b7dffed4a0d2dffb5eb1.jpg

you can see the snapped bolt there but I’m unsure if both the ac pump and the sump is threaded or if it’s just the sump

The pump is not threaded. The bolt looks rusted. Would suggest soaking that and the other two joint locations with penetrating fluid.

Where the bolt has sheared it may have left a jagged edge which is digging in to the pump body, making it harder to come off.

Let the penetrating fluid do it's work, preferably overnight, then try again. A soft faced hammer/mallet might convince it to separate or a bit of careful levering. With the broken bolt in place and at least two of the bolt positions located by hollow dowels (see next pic) it would be best to try and move the pump directly away from the sump rather than expect it to move up or down at all.

No worries I’ll try that and try in the morning again seemed pretty stuck though

2lbs of hammer and wd40 got it to move but I can’t get it off as the bolt had snapped too long but I’m sure I’ll manage as I can still get to the sump boltsIMG_1106.thumb.jpeg.e5216bc81ee3f41d4431f6caa58315fb.jpeg

also is there meant to be some screw in the 2 holes in the middle and where does the sump actually end 🤔 seems bigger than I thought
