Rattle/ticking noise + intermittent power loss

Featured Replies

Hi all I hope I’m posting in the correct forum here as I’m new but i have a 1l ecoboost fiesta 2016(65) I had a noise start around 97k miles sort of like a rattle after you let off the accelerator it would make the rattle and slowly go away then when the car hit around 104k miles it started to feel like the turbo was lagging a lot but not really noticeable until I was setting off on a hill and the car stalled and since then if I try to give it some it doesn’t really do anything as if it is in limp mode but sometimes it will be fine and I’ll put my foot down then it comes right back again also on the motorway is where it really struggles I can’t go into 5th as it will start dropping the speed and doesn’t really go over 65mph it sort of gets to that then just makes noise and doesn’t go any quicker I was thinking maybe it could be the recirculation valve as I also don’t have a recirculation noise anymore like a BOV sound and I’m thinking this because when the rattle came that’s when I didn’t have a BOV sound unless I was in high revs any help is a appreciated no matter how little🙂

  • When you fit the new one I would recommend you fit it to the pump first then attach the vacuum pipe to the new valve. The nipple on the valve is easy to break off.

  • It's a pretty crucial pipe unfortunately. The engine will run but the coolant won't be pressurised, it'll boil, and you'll be risking uneven head temps and potentially HGF. If you can tape

  • Are you sure the tensioner requires a T40. On my Focus it's a square and I just used a socket set extension bar and ratchet.

At 104K the worrying question is have the wetcam belts been replaced ?

If not then you're living on borrowed time !!

I’m not too sure if this has been done as I bought it close to 100k (probably not) but could that be a reason for the noise/power loss?

The engine is most likely suffering low oil pressure caused by bits of the wet cam belt disintegrating and clogging up the oil sump pick up strainer, an all too common problem.

The engine has possibly now been irreparably damaged and will have to be replaced. The Ecoboost 1.0 has a poor track record of engine damage when the Ford servicing  is not religiously adhered to.

The guy with the most personal experience and knowledge with an Ecoboost 1.0 is @RayC333. He can possibly add some ideas to what the issues are.

It’s had regular services just no belt change I don’t think I myself have not changed it but I was already thinking to get that done this month and would the oil light not come on if the pump was blocked?

By the time the oil pressure failure light comes on it is too late with this engine.

The Ecoboost 1.0 requires very exact oil changes using only the Ford specification oil, and no oil flushes or oil additives. Just search the term 'Ecoboost' or 'Ecoboom' on this forum to read the hundreds of threads covering these issues.

Current wetbelt changes at a Ford dealer is between £1400 and £1800. Very few independent garages will do the work because of the equipment required. There is a garage in the North West that reportedly will change the belts for around £800 to £900

Check the one way valve into the vacuum pump from the vacuum solenoid, it can break apart and block the flow of vacuum to the turbo.

Replacements are about £7

Ditto the vacuum pump valve. So common a problem they are now readily available on eBay.

Well worth a try. The silicone diaphragm inside starts to deteriorate, leading to intermittent loss of vacuum to the turbo actuator.

Also look for any splits in the vacuum pipes - to the valve in question, underneath/rear of the turbo, the solenoid attached to the vacuum pump.

Ahh I hope this is it and thanks a lot I will check today and let you know 🤞🏻

Woow very helpful, I never new about this but thank you so much I just need to get the part now 😁

Almost certainly the problem although I can't see the diaphragm properly.

Good luck.

Also @unofix do you happen to know where that place is that does the wet belt change in the north west?

These are the people.

I don't know anything about them but others have used them.

No problem I will have a look into it thanks and @RayC333 definitely will take care with it and don’t suppose anyone knows what this pipe is for and if it’s anything to do with the bigger pipe with the plastic connector on it as I seen it one day on a long journey while checking my fluidsIMG_0891.thumb.jpeg.c0e47c7f7ce8f2a462ecb62d3c1fcab9.jpegIMG_0892.thumb.jpeg.4ce403a0185b8ddeffc7dd316c4a44de.jpeg

Ray, I found that except the whole plastic kit some sites also offer the diaphragm as the only spare part. Where exactly is the problem? Obviously the membrane is damaged but is there also any damage to the plastic housing as well?

@Tony RomanIf you mean mine it’s the plastic part that houses the diaphragm that’s not staying together like it’s really loose also the diaphragm is missing bits of it like it’s got jagged edges

Oh, replacing the whole kit is better then. I thought it is only the diaphragm that needs to be replaced.

That's the gearbox breather pipe.  It was attached to a plastic nipple on top of the gearbox at some point.

It looks as though the plastic housing has come apart taking it out, but may be still serviceable. I originally bought just the diaphragm from an Eastern Block country (as that was all there was a couple of years ago). As you say you can now buy the valve assembly (as now made in quantity in China and imported).

One can do either except where the plastic housing is damaged,

Ahh so it’s got to be replaced? And if I’ve been driving some 1000s of miles without it will it have done damage?

It has nothing to do with your current issue. No damage would result. Yes you can replace it but there doesn't appear to be any gearbox oil leakage so it all depends on how fussy you want to be.
