  • The car updated SYNC using WiFi, but I had to use usb to update the maps. It took a total of about 2 hours over 3 days of different journeys to complete. For the first time in four years of owning the

  • Well the rest of the gang have been running F11 for nearly 18 months 🤣

  • It will connect to WiFi with the engine off but it won’t usually stay on for long before it shuts off to save battery so updates can take a very long time or get stuck indefinitely

So I logged out, cleared cache, relogged in, it now shows my VIN, and likes the XML file!

Well I've given that a try and still no joy 🙁

I'm all up to date but totally unable to upload the the log file. I shouldn't be surprised but sometimes I wounder at just how difficult can Ford make things ?

I found the important bit was that the VIN had to show, once I got that showing, it took the .xml straight away.

.....and it's worked 👍

Instead of logging in as I have been doing, I just manually typed in the VIN, and hey presto !! file uploaded in 5 seconds 😀

Ford could and should make it easier. Also why not on iPad or iPhone ?

Finally finished the maps update today (after about a week of driving on and off, using android auto, etc). I got a notification about the first part being completed today morning even though I had gotten the notification a day or so ago as well, which was weird, but I didnt get any notification afterwards, so i just unplugged the USB a couple of mintes ago (when the automatic update option got reticked in sync in the car) and uploaded the xml file..

Can I ask a dumb question? What is the point of uploading the XML file?

I have never tried to upload it. I've got "send analytic data to Ford Motor Company" enabled in sync. Last couple of updates I've done, I log into the Ford account, and go to my vehicle/s and it says updated, and the new version number is there. Takes about a week for it to show after updating it, but it always does

One way or another the Ford servers have to know what software versions your car is currently at so that it can advise when a newer version is available.

If you have the OTA (over the air) option enabled on your Sync system then the vehicle will periodically check with the Ford servers for newer versions. While operating system updates OTA generally works well it is very slow and impracticable for full map updates like F11 going to F12.  When your car completes an update OTA it will automatically send the log file to Ford in order to confirm a successful installation.

For full map updates it is usually better to do it by downloading the files to a USB pen and then inserting that in to the car. In this case once the installation is complete the Sync system will write a log file back to the USB pen confirming the complete install. It is this log file that then has to be sent back to the Ford servers so the update loop is closed and the status of yours cars software is then know to Ford. Without the log file being successfully uploaded to the servers, you will not be offered any further updates.

ok. Its just that, even going back a couple of years with my Transit custom, I updated to sync 3.4 and v10 maps , from Cyan labs. Never uploaded the file, but within a week, Ford knew I was on 3.4 with the latest map and no longer said "map update available". The same with 11 and 12. And it now recognises I'm on the latest sync version and map

I should have said, obviously I know the point of uploading it in theory, I'm just not sure theres any point in practice

You’d imagine sending the current map version to Ford would be a simple thing for a “connected” vehicle after a manual update.  It’s just a simple text string and possibly a code to indicate success!  Of course, none of us knows what way their services are setup behind the scenes.

What is part one and two? Which files? I’m trying OTA it’s taking forever.
I’m currently on 1U5T-14G4...-BGK.tar.gz but have definitely done some if not all 4U5T files already

Sorry, didn't see this.

Not sure which is part 1 vs 2 - i updated via USb and just got a popup on the screen for part 1. got nothing for part 2 though.

About Automatic updates, I didn’t get F11 or any sync updates for 2 years even though I get WiFi connection where I park. Got the latest sync a month or so ago OTA. Maps is making slow progress, I’ve access to a PC, probably should admit defeat and usb it.  Each file has a progress bar but it’s pretty useless as ie  don’t know if I’ve got 10 files or 4 🤔 The XML file , if the car can update OTA surely it could send a message to Ford confirming it is updated also for people that have downloaded by usb.
