stef123
hi all i only have 1 key to my 2001 focus, am i right in thinking that i can get a new blank key fob of ebay, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FORD-MONDEO-FOCUS-FIESTA-PUMA-COUGAR-KA-REMOTE-KEY-FOB-/280561826385?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4152c9ba51 get it cut at my local lock smith then re programme the new key fob my self. any help would be appreciated. the key looks ok, chances of the chip inside being the correct one is another story. you will need a locksmith who does car keys, they will need to cut and programme the key - you cannot do this yourself with only one key. they will clone your original key onto the new key, all you will need to do is programme the central locking. this means you still only really have one key so you cannot programme any further keys yourself. timpsons (the key and shoe place) do this service for about £75 per key. that includes a new chip - best off removing any chip that comes with the eBay key to save hassle when programming (trust me )
blimp
You can re-programme the key to work the remote central locking with just 1 other key but this will not knock off the imobiliser you do need 2 original keys to do that yourself. artscot79
do you have a timpson shoe/key shop near you? also some auto electricians do keys these days. ideally you want 2 keys so that in the future if one key is wearing badly you can programme a new key youreself imagine that 1 key weras youre in a difficult situation then as said you can have youre original key cloned which is cheaper but still wont allow you to programme any keys yoyreself mobile auto locksmith in yellow pages will come to you supply the key without fob as you dont need the fob and its cheaper cut and programme the key
darrensmith
i have tried one locksmith that put my key into a little machine and said that as it was chipped he couldnt do it, going to try around this week and will check if i have a timpsons around, but i live in devon and theres not much around these parts. mite have to try exeter of plymouth, give me something to research later, its going to ford next friday for the cambelt if all else fails i can just ask them to get me 1 new key. so i can then programme another 1 myself the only key i have is looking a bit worn, if i leave it to late it might end up costing me loads. i read on a few threads that the chip cam be removed and inserted into a new key, but with only 1 key do i really want to be messing about with it, thanks for all the help, im really glad i joined this forum

stef123
Darrensmith - yes you are correct, the chip can be removed and transferred between keys. the guy in my local timpsons managed to cut me new blades from my old key even although its very worn. there are 4 depths of cut, and to a trained eye they can work them out, took about 10 seconds on my old worn key :) new key works absolutely perfect. i got 2 keys cut and programmed at timpsons for £100, a bargain imo. cressws1
I only had 1 key (not remote fob) when I bought my T reg focus. I realised this would be an issue so I bought a blank blade + remote fob from eBay. However It wasn't programmed to the car and I couldn't do this as you need 2 already working keys to DIY. Last week I paid a company called Rapid locksmiths £110 to do the following : - Check the car for electrical fault codes - Clear any currently programmed keys to the car (Means any lost/stolen keys will now not work with the car) - Provide, Cut and program 1 ford remote fob to my Car - Take the chip out of my already working key and put it in the remote fob I bought off eBay, And program this to the car. It took the bloke about 25 mins all in and was I'm glad I had it done. I now have 2 remote fobs programmed to the car that act as originals, So in future I can program as many keys as I want DIY (I think the limit is 8). Ford wanted around £200 just to program a key I'd already bought off eBay to the car.

(i hope) so ill be asking for the method for the re-program soon.
