Michael Purvis
hi,bought a 11reg fiesta edge a few weeks ago, everything seems fine apart from i hate selecting reverse gear, the odd time i select it,start moving backwards then the gear stick will kinda pop up a little bit then a grinding noise like the clutch is grinding and i have to stop and re select reverse and then it seems alright,i didnt buy it from a ford dealer but im wondering if i should take it to my local ford dealer because it still has 2 years manufacture warrenty on it,any advice would be grateful :)
Kaiwen22
Does the reverse gear feel difficult to slide in sometimes? Ive known that Ford have had such trouble with reverse since the 70's (at least in my family who owned Fords) My fezz does something similar. Ive been told to do this when its stiff. Select 1st gear then 2nd gear then reverse (should go in smoother). If still not happy I dont think it would hurt to have it checked out

Stoney871
Pump the clutch a couple of times and reverse will go in easier. Needed to do that sometimes with my last Focus (Mk1)
iNath
The Ford crunch is normal, from what I've read it's happened for the past 30 years! You either need come to a full & complete stop before selecting reverse, or double clutch (ie move in to neutral, clutch up, clutch down, and then in to reverse)
DaveD
I remember my 1971 Ford Escort. Gear lever selection was like an electric light switch, so light and smooth the best gearbox of any car on the road them days.
Michael Purvis
cheers, sometimes it goes in reverse easily but other times its a pain,im used to my old clio where u had to lift up jst below the gear stick then go into reverse next to 1st gear and not below 5th like in the fiesta (sometimes it looks and feels like it goes into 4th) i find it doesnt do it if i only lift the clutch peddle a little bit then gradually reverse faster, unlike where i used to be able to lift the clutch right up and speed backwards, but i will keep an eye on it,can you just go to any ford dealer and ask them, jennings is my closest even though i didnt buy it off a ford dealer?? DaveD
The best thing about our Ford Ka (besides the price) is that it has a proven Fiat engine and gearbox (donkeys years old design) which are childs play to service and fix.
Vince Osborn
I've noticed on mine that reverse is more of a two stage "shove" Once im fully on the clutch it goes halfway, but if i touch the throttle it just grinds, I find i have to hold it in place for the first half a sec to get it fully in
Stoney871
As I said earlier, pump the clutch a couple of times and reverse will drop in cleanly.
Michael Purvis
i think i may of got a nack for it,if i rev the engine at about 2000 revs it never pops out but if i dont have many revs when i start reversing it pops out
AJ_sXe
Mine does it also when backing out of the warehouse (after doing mods in the nice dry warmth :P ) glad to know it's not just my car (or my !Removed! poor driving!)
Stewie316
I was actually going to open a thread last week because i was having the exact same issue. This is worse when you live on a slight hill and reverse sometimes. When reverse pops out of gear and grinds it sounds awful. Ford of course couldn't fault it so i just pump the clutch or bring the rev meter up a bit.
